I recently upgraded my Galaxy S2 from OS 4.0.3 to 4.1.2.
After the upgrade, I found my language dictionary had been wiped of all custom words, and the dictionary now refuses to accept new word entries. (Previously, I could save a new word simply by pressing one of a list of suggestions that came up when a new word was typed using the keyboard.) The 'Personal dictionary' option under 'Language and input' is no longer there.
Going to Settings > Personal > Language and input > 'Settings' icon for Samsung keyboard > Pressing the heading 'Predictive text': the 'Personalised data' check box is ticked, and learning from Facebook and Gmail are also enabled.
Nothing has made a difference.
Also, the word-entry behaviour when using the keyboard for anything other than messaging services is no longer consistent.
When I type an SMS message or use Whatsapp, for instance, the keyboard behaves itself. But when filling in entry fields on web pages, it refuses to auto-capitalize or auto-space.

- The 'MessageEaze keyboard' app was evaluated, but rejected.
- The 'Gingerbread keyboard' app is installed and enabled, but the options to manually add words do not work. (You are allowed to enter the words, and they appear under Gingerbread keyboard settings > Advanced settings > Gingerbread keyboard > Language pack and dictionary > User dictionary, but the custom entries are not available when you try to enter them via the keyboard.)
- Google voice typing is present, but disabled.
- Swype is enabled.
- The phone has been restarted several times during the course of all this. No difference.
