Help Galaxy S2 i9108 - Where to start?

Misterbashi

Hi All,

I have recently bought an i9108, and have some important questions before I start trying to change it.

Firstly, the software seems very restricted for an Android device, no market place and lots of Chinese apps already installed that I will never use.

Being designed to work with the TDSCDMA network, will flashing the phone have an affect on this?

I cant find many people with experience of this, but there are so many ex pats in China, someone must have had some results..

If anyone can point me in the right direction for the first steps, it will be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Strangely I just joined today from China also!

I bought a Galaxy S2 i9100 as a grey import, as it had the foreign hardware (i.e. W-CDMA rather than TD-SCDMA) and the right apps. installed, including Market Place.

If you first root your phone you can flash it with non-chinese firmware and install the right apps. It won't change the hardware obviously, so you will still be with the TD-SCDMA network, so if you want to go 3G, you will only be able to do so on China Mobile. For me, as I am W-CDMA, I can only use China Unicom.

I rooted my phone using something called SuperOneClick, although there are other software available. I only joined today, but I think there's a thread somewhere here about how to root your phone.

Where abouts in China are you?

Hi Alf,

Thanks for getting back to me, I am in Shenzhen and dont use my phone outside of China too much.
I was suing a Iphone but the emails over EDGE we're driving me mad.

Unfortunately, I dont seem to be getting a 3G signal with this new phone, but I'll investigate that tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice, so changing the firmware will have no affect on the hardware for the 3G at all?

How do I know which firmware I should use? there seems to be so many
