Here's the specs from Samsung Samsung GALAXY S II
Looks like it'll appear first with AT&T which is good for me being thats where my family plan is and I have no problems with ATT here on Long Island.
Looks like it's going to be one awesome phone and I'm due for an upgrade so I've been looking. Not interested in the iPhone from all I've read.
Wondering whatcha all think of this phone....also wondering what the cost'll be...couldn't be more than the iPhone...could it?
 
If you pick up the SuperAmoled+ version, there are enough subpixles to make the effect of pixelation practically invisible.
However, I would also like to see here a qHD resolution. Ah well, HTC has such a device.

The new screen they have doesn't need the qhd. Would it be nice to have it still? Yes, but everyone has their version of a special screen. You will not see any pixels with the Plus screen.

Oh, and where did you see it'll come to At&t first?
 
Regarding the screen pixelation, resolution, the Super AMOLED on origianl Galaxy S had WVGA 800X480 resolution (the same as Evo, Incredible) with pentile pixel structure. This effectively lowers the actual resolution especially on small texts and it's noticeable when you zoom on it. SLCD of the same resolution has square pixels, so the text clarity issue is not bad like SuperAMOLED. The benefit of SuperAMOLED is in rich color, high contrast with pure black color.

Now in this year, qHD LCD screens made into Atrix, Bionic. But they turned out to be with pentile pixels unfortunately, essentially offsetting the advantage of higher resolution for text clarity. New HTC phones like Evo 3D, Pyramid are said to have qHD SLCD as well, but it's not clear yet if they are square pixels. The Super AMOLED+ in SGS2 will have square pixel structure to improve text clarity while retaining all the benefits of Super AMOLED. So it will be very nice looking screen at least as good as WVGA SLCD in clarity plus rich colors, contrast, viewing angle.
 
Well, ultimately, Pentile sub-pixel configuration notwithstanding, I'd prefer to see more pixel density (PPI). As the display size increases, the PPI deceases assuming a fixed resolution.

I'd love to see more manufacturers migrate to the qHQ/960x540 spec, especially phones 4" and over. Plus qHD is ~1.78:1 ratio (like any HD spec display) vs. 1.67 for the "standard" Android resolution (800x480), which is better for media/movie playback.

I'm sure ultimately it will have outstanding color/contrast, especially considering the original SGS display!

Guys, qHD Super AMOLED Plus is coming. Increasing the pixel density will require a complete revamp of the manufacturing process to use a higher density masking technology, but Samsung plans to do this to exceed 300ppi. Right now the manufacturing line only reaches about 200ppi max. It's a little ambitious to expect something this year (maybe in the Fall?) but I'd bet on CES 2012 being the debut, maybe along with other improvements.
 
I've read in a few places that HTC is also using pentile technology for their upcoming gHD display phones. They can have double gHD for all I care....if it's pentile it'll still look ugly.
 
If HTC is using pentile pixels in qHD SLCD like Atrix, then WVGA Super AMOLED plus will have similar sharpness to it plus excellent contrast, color, viewing angle.

That's surprising, if true. Must be some sort of stop gap method of hitting qHD without upgrading the manufacturing line. Sooner or later qHD will be true resolution but sounds like it won't be until late this year or next. Who is cranking out the displays for the iPhone? Maybe they're the only one running a high pixel density process and Apple has an exclusivity agreement with that manufacturer right now? There's nothing wrong with LCD, but I'm glad Samsung is committed to OLED technology.

I read the same but had no idea about the timeframe. That should be pretty stunning when available!

I think it's a combination of current production lines and cost mitigation.

I had an Atrix with qHD (~275 PPI) and while the density was an improvement, there was still pentile "noise", plus coming from a Captivate, the color/contrast was a major step down (one reason I returned it, just too much compromise all around).

FYI, I believe LG is the current supplier for Apple displays. The iPhone is still my reference for a nearly perfect display on a phone (size not withstanding).

My question is where did you see it was coming to At&t first? Your post made it seem like the phone was out now & they announced the US carriers.

According to my search on asian electronics industry, Sony is the supplier of SLCD for HTC and LG display is the supplier of IPS/LCD retina display for apple iPhone4. It seems like retinal LCD line is exclusively reserved for apple and they seem to struggle to meet very high demand. But LG is trying to implement high contrast IPS/LCD at lower resolution (WVGA) to their own phones like Optimus 2X, Black.

Everyone likes higher resolution display screen, but often overlooks that it requires more powerful GPU to keep up with processing more pixels. If you look at recent graphic benchmark charts, iPhone4 is near the bottom due to its 960X640 resolution and not powerful enough SGX535 GPU in its A4 processor. Samsung knows about this issue, so they are preparing next version of Exynos for their retinal SAMOLED+ display in the near future.
 
Interesting info. I don't see much of a need beyond qHD for ~4" phone displays because the information really is lost in translation. If anything the particular point of qHD is that it's somewhat more straightforward for scaling 1080p content. Apple's retina resolution is overkill, but the move made perfect sense in that it was an even 2x scale factor from the first gen resolution.
 
Depends how good your retina is. Eyesight is such an individual thing. 20/20 really doesn't mean jack as you can get two people with that same "perfect" vision and one could be utterly blind compared to the other or even worse than someone with 20/1000 wearing glasses. Some people can see the pixels. Some can't. That's why there are so many inane arguments about what is good enough as people tend to use themselves as the perfect baseline and generalize the entire population. If they can cram more resolution without compromising TOO much, let them. Everyone will be happy, except for those lamenting over their lower quadrant scores.
 
lol true. The 800x480 resolution on my i8910 looks splendid. Granted it's only 3.7" lol. I've seen the 4" i9000 screen, and the pixels are easy to see if you put the phone to your face. Lol. It's all relative to viewing distance, and to a certain degree, becomes less important to the user, and more for the sake of being a market leader. Lol.

Oh, okay. I was just wondering because I've seen that site several times since Sammy announced the phone and never seen anything about At&t on it since Barcelona. Well, it's safe to assume it will come to all carriers. I mean it's the sequel. Now when? Idk. I say next month and falling into June. Possibly later.

"Word on the street is now that the Galaxy SII will be hitting stores at some point in March. Both versions of the Galaxy SII, the 16GB and the 32GB, will be available mid to late March which should give the phone some advantage of one of its most important competitors for 2011, the iPhone 5. At the same time Samsung should sell even more Galaxy SII units than current Galaxy S sales considering the new superphone will come out a lot sooner than it’s predecessor did last year.
Naturally we’ll still need the official Samsung press release to confirm the imminent Galaxy SII arrival, so stay tuned for more details on the launch of this new Android handset.
