I tried to do as much research as possible before posting but wasn't able to come to a definitive conclusion as it seems my symptoms differ from most others, I'll try to explain this as simply as possible and include all information I think may be relevant.

Before this issue started to occur I used to have the problem where the power off/airplane mode/restart menu would pop up randomly (which recently hasn't been occurring) and that leads me to believe my current issue may be caused by a malfunctioning power button but I'll let you guys decide that.

So it started last night where my phone would power off on it's own, I was running Snapchat trying to take a video, powered down about 3 times, plugged it into the charger with the hopes it'd prevent my phone from powering down, which it did, to finish taking my video, took it off a little bit later and it ran fine the rest of the night and most of this morning.

Earlier this morning was playing clash of clans, and it powered down on me in the middle of a war attack even, powered it back up and for the next couple hours it would last about 10-30 mins before randomly
powering off

After those couple hours I couldn't get it to stay powered on for more than a couple seconds so I went and plugged it on the charger, while on the charger it'd stay up and running but power down as soon as it was unplugged

Had to drive home from work so I tried throwing it on the car charger for the drive but it wouldn't power up, even tried it without the battery in but still won't turn on but it does recognize that it's charging

Got home and decided to get to the bottom of this issue, did some reading up on this forum and others about those experiencing similar
issues, found out how how to do a recovery boot, wiped the cache partition then tried to reboot but it gave me an error message and now I can't get the phone to stay on at all even when plugged into a charger, the only time it stays on for more than a couple seconds is when I'm in the recovery boot menu

I'd really like to avoid doing a factory reset but I fear I'm running out of options, any help is appreciated!

This is a strange one at 1st I was gonna say "power button" but surely the charger being plugged in wouldn't affect that?(?)
As for the current problem, a factory reset or a reflash are your only hope (both I think(?) will wipe your phone anyway).
If any Samsung guys can confirm that a reflash will wipe the phone then I suggest a factory reset first.

After trying another battery (a small phone repair shop will let you try on the promise of buying it if it works) so Mike says :thumbsupdroid:

EDIT will it stay in download mode? (power, Home and volume DOWN) ?

You're gonna have to do some research then mate like googling "flash stock firmware Odin" or something similar.
The phone needs reflashed I think (or that's your only software hope)

Ended up reflashing it as well, total bust, lost absolutely everything as I expected and to top it off the phone doesn't recognize my SIM card now. But at least the phone will stay powered on whilst plugged into the charger so there's that, just gonna call it a paperweight and go get something new, thanks for everyone's input I appreciate you guys trying to help, just seems the phone was beyond saving

Och it's never beyond saving mate but if you're looking for a great new phone, check out the Oneplus One. Prices have recently dropped and it was already very cheap for a 3gb ram 1080p 5.5' screen phone.
I'm biased coz I replaced my s3 with one lol.
Good luck brother
