Help Galaxy S3 crashing when copying text to clipboard

The clipboard problem on my Samsung Galaxy S3 was driving me nuts. Had it before FW-update, hoped that would fix it. It didn't. Then I reset my phone and hoped that 'fix' will last forever. It didn't: Soon after factory reset the phone started to reboot after some copy/paste actions, however, most of the time copy/paste worked, so I thought I can live with that. Until yesterday, there clipboard fully stopped working after reboot.

Still I didn't want to reset or root. Hoping, meanwhile there might be some other fix in the forums but I just came across the same old threads, until I read your post...


  1. I installed the exploit (unfortunately as new user I am not allowed to post URLs)
  2. 'one-click-rooted' my phone
  3. installed root explorer from PlayStore
  4. deleted the contents of /data/clipboard/*,
  5. rebootet
and copy paste now works again! I am sooo happy! :D

PS: As some other users I strongly suppose Google Chrome has something to do with the clipboard issue, so I temporarily uninstalled it to see if the problem will still come back.

It is, but it's one-click rooting by simply installing an app. Presumably one is not so inclined to accidentally brick their device in the process of rooting it, for many devices it apparently won't show up as "device modified" and it's allegedly easy to back out--should Samsung ever get around to actually, you know, fixing the bug in their clipboard code.

Of course: When Samsung finally releases new code, it would appear odds are good they'll break something else. From Samsung's developer forum:

I could not get to the forums of the links. Do I have to sign up to be able to read?

So it as simple as: you root installing the mentioned app, and you unroot uninstalling it?

When my provider offers the 4.1.2 upgrade, Kies will connect to this type of root, or I just un-root and upgrade (without losing data)?

My only reason for not rooting this far is that updating a root device means to have to factory reset and reconfigure everything, right?

Appreciate your (any) help.
 
Well, that didn't last long- the error is back along with the crashes and random clipboard items. At least it still allowed me to use the "fix" mentioned of manualing clearing the clipboard. Once I did that again, things seem to be back to "normal"...we'll see.

Just to share:

Well, I installed Chainfire's Exynos-Exploit app, rooted, deleted clipboard files and copy&paste is working again. I'll be using Clipboard Cleaner once in a while to keep c&p going.

My Device Status is "Normal", thus, so far, it seems Kies still recognizes the device as unrooted: it connected and detected the Firmware etc. Hopefully I'll be able update to 4.1.2 without having to Factory Reset my device.

Let's see what happens.

I have a Tab 10.1 and since the last update to 4.0.4 I'm having the same problem, can't copy paste and when I try the app crashes, very frustrating!!:mad:

My S II running the same version firmware is fine, so I don't understand what the problem is?

C'mon Samsung, fix this please!!!!!!!!!!!:(
 
I've had this problem on my Galaxy Tab 8.9 since the factory ICS update. Dr3do's method worked for me too!

No hint of the problem with my GS3... yet.
 
So does this happen after doing a lot of copy and pasting or did it happen to people the first time they did it?

Some were saying Chrome may have something to do with it. Did/do you have Chrome installed after the update?
 
I thought by upgrading to 4.1.2 I'd fixed it but I've now noticed it's even worse! Initially this only happened when I copied and pasted within a browser, now my phone crashes copying in Gmail.
