Galaxy S3 - Losing RAM?

Searched and couldn't find a similar thread or post...so asking the masses.

I noticed when going in to task manager to close applications (using the "clear memory" button), that the total available RAM was 1.62. It was like this for as long as I can remember, and I attributed the .38gb of ram initial loss to ram needing to be set aside. Similar to how a 160GB hard drive on a new computer doesn't actually give you 160GB.

Anyway...I noticed the other day that my total available memory was only 1.59 now. I think this happened within the past week, and it stays the same even after a reboot.

Any idea if this is normal, or if anyone else has had this issue? For the record, I've had this phone on Verizon since the official launch date.

Any help is appreciated.

No need to go and clear RAM, it manages itself on its own. The same as one used to use RAM cleaners on Win 98/ Me/ 2000 there is no need to do that on Win 7 Android manages RAM well enough not to clear it all the time as it makes your experence less smooth and apps take longer to start.

RAM is not the same as Hardrive space , where a 80 gb Hardrive would give you 70ish something gigs due to formatting(im making the number up) with RAM what you see is what you get, with android the system takes some of the RAM during boot up, and it also pre-loads some apps as well , android is really efficient at the way it handles memory and can predict the apps you will need so clearing the memory constantly doesn't really help alot.

there are a few exceptions where poorly coded apps end up draining your battery, facebook used to be that way but i stopped caring , with 2 gigs of RAM you shouldn't really be worrying about it I rarely use close to half the RAM on my gs3.

the built in RAM manager to enable quick reopening , Android OS applications remain in memory even when they are closed, if there is not enough memory , the low memory killer kicks in and automatically frees memory by clearing the least recent app, if you clear memory manually applications take longer to open.

I appreciate the replies, but decided to come back when I noticed that it happened again. Any ideas on why the amount of RAM available would be lowering over time? The amount available (which is circled in red) does not go up when the phone is restarted. It stays at that amount...well, until some event happens which causes it to lower...Pics are below:

Again...I'm concerned with the total amount of RAM, not the amount available at that given moment.

Bro id say just dont think about it.
I have the global 1gb ram version and i typically have around 100mb free ram... in fact my benchmark scores are higher when i dont clear ram.
Youl be adding widgets etc which do use ram. If the free ram got low enough, android would start closing things.
Its a case of trusting the phone to use its memory in a better way than you can :)

I see what you're saying. I completely trust that Samsung and the Android system know how to manage anything on the phone better than I.

I guess I'm just wondering if there is a logical explanation to this. I mean, wouldn't you be alarmed if a week from now you opened the RAM manager on your phone and saw that you were at 733MB/769MB? Then a couple months later saw that you were at 733MB/745MB?

Is this an issue that everyone is having?

Is there a good reason for this? Maybe As I've added programs and widgets, or even switched to using NOVA Launcher, the amount of RAM being used right when the phone is booted goes from 0.38MB (leaving the initial 1.62MB) to 0.44MB (leaving the 1.56 I'm at now).

Just hitting up those who are more knowledgeable about the Android system and computers to help walk me through what's going on! :)

Lol yeah youre talkin bout total ram shrinking?
Tbh i duno but id guess its the firmware updates :)

....think yourself lucky ur on the 2gb version lol. Imagine how scary it is on the 1gb ;)

RAM is not the same as Hardrive space , where a 80 gb Hardrive would give you 70ish something gigs due to formatting

An 80 GB hard drive is 74 GB in a computer. This is nothing to do with formatting.

Hardware manufacturers use 1x1000x1000x1000 B to be a GB

Software more correctly:
1x1024x1024x1024

I try not to think about the mathematics lol.
So why does our total ram shrink SU mate?

And why cant everything be properly metric? I blame americans :P

My 1st computer (commodore 64) had 64kb memory and storage was a tape lol. My next computer (Atari St) had a half mb, 520bytes? memory lol (storage was a 3.5" floppy) :)

But it stays the same on the short term so is it just the firmware usin more as it updates.
Yeah you prob answerd mate but as we all know i have a 90 i/q :)

Actualy 125 but we're all good at different. Things :)

In other words, it probably was answered but not to ME. (dont know if youll understand that)

The system will always use a certain amount and have it reserved. Different updates may use different amounts. Its not really important.
