Help Galaxy SII UK Orange - starts over and over

Hi. Until this morning, this phone has been the best I've ever owned. Yesterday it ran out of battery. So, today, I plug it into my PC via USB to recharge. After about 20 minutes, battery was showing 25% full so I switched it on. But, the phone never gets past the Samsung Galaxy SII logo apart from briefly followed by the Orange 'exploding screen' effect. The phone is really trying to start and has been doing now for over an hour. I'm going to switch it off and hope someone can assist me in getting this thing started. Phone is UK stock, no mods at all.

Firstly I would try cleaning your USB port on your phone
Secondly I would try a soft+hard reset (see my sig)
If still no joy, take your battery out for 20 minutes or so, and try again

Will try the soft reset, after I've cleaned the USB port. I'm not certain though as to the effects of a hard reset? Does it wipe all the data, apps, settings etc from the phone. Will I have to reload the operating system etc? Hard reset sounds dramatic, bit possibly isn't?

OK. Cleaned the USB port and a soft reset - no improvement.

Also tried a hard reset but the phone continues to restart on a repeating cycle of 4 or 5 seconds.
 
Try clearing the cache in recovery mode (vol up+menu+power on).
Otherwise may have to do a factory reset. This doesn't wipe your storage (photos/music etc) and it doesnt sound like a hardware problem, so losing your configuration and settings (assuming you have your contacts synced) is probably as bad as it's going to get.
 
Have entered recovery mode. Before I do a 'wipe cache partition', I wonder if anything of the below info is of help at all in sorting this out?

Sounds like the internal storage partition might be corrupt?

What happens if you plug your USB in while in recovery? Can you see the drives?
 
Plugged it into the USB to computer without realising that it was out of battery. Now it's getting power from the USB, the large battery icon is visible with a yellow triangle in it. This problems seems to be growing arms and legs? Any ideas?

Battery is now at 50%. went into recovery mode. Where should I see drives and which drives should I see when plugged into pc with usb per quote below?

All I see at the moment is the same screen as I posted before in red and yellow text.

No. Didn't see the drives in my computer at all. When I plugged the phone into the pc, a popup advised that device drivers failed to install.

Should I go back to reovery mode and do a factory reset?

Do cache first then reboot, then if that doesnt help factory reset. If that doesn't work you'd be best taking it back to Orange, unless you're comfortable with some re-flashing which could potentially void the warranty.

So, just to recap, if I do a factory reset (3rd option on the recovery mode screen), the settings and configuration will be lost, but not photos, files etc?

If I have to send back to Orange, then I assume they won't warranty saving anything at all and would possibly return it as it first stood out of the box.

I'm not completely averse to reflashing the phone as I'm sure board members could 'talk' me through it via this board. A couple of questions arise though, being

#1. Do I reflash from the recovery mode screen as that is as far as I can get at the moment?

#2. Will reflashings also wipe all photos, settings, files, apps etc as part of the process?

Finally, my phone has the 2gb sdcard in it. Is it possible that this is ther source of the problem? Is it possible for the phone to switch on with the card removed?

Definitely try without the SD card, i'm not sure if "E:" is internal or external.
A factory reset won't delete photos on your storage, but it sounds like your storage might be corrupt anyway.

And yes its likely Orange will return it in its factory state
