Root Galaxy/Stock android on behold 2 - It flies!

For me personally, I could only get one thing at a time to upload with Odin otherwise the program would shut down by itself. It was a pain in th ebutt but once I got PDA installed it was gravy.

Well it's loading now it's just taking forever.

40 mins and counting and the green bar is at the halfway mark

odin shouldn't take longer than 6 min and that is including the reboot (i just did it last night). i have no idea why its taking your's so long, sorry i can't be more helpful.

Word to the wise ... ODIN doesn't function properly on every computer.

It took me using 3 different computers before ODIN worked properly and all of them were running windows XP 32 bit (minimum service pack 2 with USB 2.0).

1st comp - more than 60 mins stalled halfway

2nd comp - more than 20 mins stalled quarter way

3rd comp - under 3 mins total full download

Edit - ODIN worked on comp 1 the first time I installed it but after that it was an epic fail.

If your having so many problems with Odin, be sure the following phone is plugged in but not mounted, usb debugging check, mass sortage off, and on you computer adb processes is shut down. After several freezes of Odin I figured out you have to go into task manager and shut down adb.exert process. Hope this helps, no more than 6 minutes for Odin..

I followed those steps precisely ... even shut down every other unneccessary process running and it was still bugging out.

heh try reinstalling windows. I haven't gone through this process myself as whats the point of the camera doesnt work, but since you say you tried it on three winxp computers with different results means there are different configurations on each that may be affecting the odin process. Or who knows, maybe its just your phone. But maybe try doing this in linux? As long as you got a decent enough computer you can virtualize(is run linux in a sandbox) linux with VirtualBox real easy without having to install it for real. Its what I would do when I used to have a Sony Ericsson and needed to tinker with it.

Tidied up the first post and stressed u dont need to read the whole thread. Added issues/notworking. Linked to MrAndroids tutorial.

Anything else?

This may be a silly question - but does factory reset wipe all downloaded apps?

and if so, how does one go about recovering those apps? (aside from noting them in advance & re-downloading)

and if that *is* the recovery, do purchased apps remain purchased across device wipes?

@CSanner - Purchased apps do persist across wipes / ROM's as long as you "register" the new install using the same Google Account... To be clear, when you're asked to "register" with Google either as part of the device configuration or when you first visit Marketplace make sure you are using the same Google Account.

So I installed Galaxy last night and have to say it ROCKS, way faster. Having said that I have observed one other permutation to the ODIN / ADB issue. If you're using a third party home screen, debug mode will not work until you switch to using the default Samsung home screen (at least that was the case with both Open Home and SlideScreen). This can be confirmed by switching back to the default TWLauncher while connected via usb - you'll get the USB notification that a new device is available.
My suggestion for a "Best Practice" would be to reinstall the stock ROM using ODIN - that gives the user practice doing it in case there is a problem and ensures the third party home app issue is removed from the equation.

@kkarlin - thanks much.

i assume this also means "yes, apps are wiped from the device and you have to reinstall them"

so very tempted...if only it were an OS upgrade as well...

Correct, the apps are wiped. To easily find them go to Market Place and then My Downloads, your purchased apps will be displayed there even if they're not installed yet.

As far as being tempted, all I can say is "Just Do It!", it's not as hard or scary as you think. The number one piece of advice I have is download the ODIN and test a factory restore before trying that should take all the edge off the experience. Also, not that in my experience if you're on Vista or Win7 ODIN should be run both as a WinXP app (right click program icon - Compatability Settings) and as Administrator (right click progam icon - Run As Administrator). It crashed every time before I did those two things.

Best of luck.

how about if I'm on a Mac?

Can't really speak to that, I have a MacBook Pro, but it's running Vista...

:D:eek::D

I'd Google ODIN and MAC and see what you get.

To the mod and devs: I was bored and I checked out the open source page Samsung has for hosting the kernel and found they have posted a new zip. The first release was about 109MB, this one is 112MB.

Open Source - Samsung Mobile

Did the first one contain anything of use?

I'm downloading now to take a look.... we'll see... waiting for it to finish.

Apparently it's still Cupcake (1.5) But I saw some comments there that I believe they were fixing some bluetooth and some sdcard issues. They also added some symlinks for "backwards compatibility" so maybe it's 1.6? I doubt it though because platform still says Cupcake.

Can someone running a linux machine please BUILD the source code and let me know when thats done. I want to run the built code in the AVD Manager and see what it looks like. Send it to me, if it's too big, i'll make an anonymous FTP on my site for you to upload it so I can test it.

If you take a look at the build scripts in the scripts directory, it wont build as there are some drivers missing as well as a couple of patches Samsung has for it(referenced in the scripts). So building fails.

before you do it you can install astro from the market and back up all of your apps to the sd card (except ones marked ad private). Then when you are done you will just have to install astro again and use it to install from the backups. There is another app that lets you do the same thing but I cant remember the name of it.

You can install the HTC keyboard on this too if you want:

http://androidforums.com/samsung-i7500/8079-htc-keyboard-samsung.html

If you still get force closes after installing the MMS app, rm -r Mms.apk and Mms.odex and then reinstall the mms app. Then finally, rm -r /data/dalvik-cache

Re the behold2 source. You can patch it to make it compile but its a real pain. Not really worth it since there's not too many changes in there right now.

RE the market. It saves your purchased apps, AND you're free apps but only on the first launch. Once you've done the initial setup, turn off you're display timeout, and launch the market. Go to downloads and install all you're apps.
Then turn you're display timeout on again.

If you don't turn off the display timout and the screen turns off, when you unlock it market will 'forget' you're free apps. Nice bug from android!

Oh really? I suppose removing references to the drivers that Samsung hasn't released will allow it to compile, but I wouldn't call that a step forward. Unless you found them somewhere.

Thanks for this - it was necessary.

this didn't actually turn out to be the case. I took down a list of all my apps, fortunately.
