Root Galaxy/Stock android on behold 2 - It flies!

rone: brick means send in for repair. Its a very plausible outcome, but of course we'll try to do sensible tests and prevent it. You should still assume that it'll be bricked because that way you can really asses if its a risk you are willing to take.
Previously we had people who were in their return period or had insurance and multiple phones.

My insurance is on my N1 and I am well beyond my return period. So at this point I am probably not a good candidate for this. Once you get a little closer and are looking for somebody to test, I can help with that.

Thanks for working on this.

Mastermind278: I edited my message to reflect the fix that I found, but thanks for providing further insight.

The smartphone is working very well, but I'm still unimpressed with the constant "firmware update" message when I use my camera. I understand that I've made a tradeoff from the much better camera software that came stock with the Behold II. But I wonder just how much.

Just thinking out loud, though. I certainly don't miss vibrate. And I can be patient until we get an upgrade.

Question to folks like me:

What should I be looking for in order to know how to update my Galaxy OS once this becomes available?

Thanks as always - great community.

The change doesnt actually downgrade you're camera firmware.

You still have NEW firmware on your camera. The galaxy app just doesnt understand that and thinks you have an older firmware. The bh2 camera firmware you have is newer and is downward compatable tho.

BREAKTHROUGH!

Thanks to Mastermind278 for allowing me to test with his phone. We flashed a galaxy kernel onto the behold!

It wont boot because it needs to be modified, but it means we can flash alternative kernels to the behold2 now :)

It's great to know that we are slowly getting some progress. Always glad to help! =)

Does this mean we might be able to get the mustymod (aka android 2.0) running on the BH2 sometime in the near future?

I only BARELY know what that means, but thanks Kam and Mastermind! This is going to be a great phone with 2.x and no TW.

Loaded droid 1.5 on my BH2. it worked, but it was pretty buggy, for some reason it was running with less free RAM than it was with the touchJUNK on it as well as it was just acting up. once it gets a little bit more updated i'll for sure flash back because it was nice while it lasted!

well thats not right, once you kill all your tasks, then you should have nearly twice as much ram! ps. its not droid, thats the name of a phone, its Android lol

Just to let you guys know, your work is helping a lot of complete newbs to the android thing. This is my first android phone, and i really like it, but realized early on it had to be able to run better than what I was experiencing. I've swapped it to stock android and back again just to try it out. While stock is awesome, it just didn't have all the functionality I wanted. So I'm really hoping you smarter than I folks get this off the ground! Thanks for all your hard work, and I'll be keeping an eye on this thread!

Here's a question for you: How would I get the ugly old Touch Wizard interface back? I'm concerned that I may need to swap phones at T-Mobile since I'm having the quite recurring problem of disappearing applications. Basically, apps that I've installed will fail quite randomly after a reboot or shutdown.

Just ODIN back to the stock image.

You might also want to read this in regards of loosing applications: http://androidforums.com/samsung-behold-2/32936-programs-disappearing-my-behold-ii.html

On a side note there is a new version of the galaxy system L3.

Use the system.img from this file instead, if you're installing the galaxy system

[updated first post too]

DONT FLASH THIS WITH ODIN!!! Just extract the system.img and put in your sdcard as per the first post here.

Thanks, Kam. You are a very responsive smart-phone expert. :) I have done some searching but cannot find the idiot's guide to installing the thing you linked me to. Can you perchance point me to the right place?

Nothing noticable. Just worth using this file if you ever do this again from scratch. Maybe in 2+ days after installing the normal behold 2 update for the new kernel. Battery is reported to be improves.

DocBadWrench: Everything you need to restore is in the first post (right at the bottom in the section how to restore back to stock. That file includes odin AND the firmware).
