Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

Guys, please excuse if this is the complete wrong forum.

My Wife bought me a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 today for my wedding anniversary and was wondering if there was a link handy from any forum members regarding rooting the device or unlocking it to allow me better access to it, similar to my Galaxy S2.

I had a browse on the forums, and am probably being blind, but i could not see a sub forum for tablets, more specifically my new tab.

Also, from experience, what benefits would i see from unlocking my tab, if any.

Many thanks for reading, and apologies if this is the total wrong forum.

I was going to use the link you were sent, but found some inconsistencies, the button assignment to get in and out of the downloader were wrong. I found a better rooting guide with files that I actually used, have the same tablet as you, and this was not hard at all, took about an hour because I was cautious. There is even a video to guide you along. Use the video to see how to but follow the guide link for actual buttons to press. This does work, that is how I rooted mine.

This is the real deal for what you've got. Been there, done that. Good luck!

After spending hours this morning looking for a walkthrough I thought I would never get here due to running 4.0.4 but then came across this site hitting the nail on the head stating the following

Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100 / P5110 / P5113 and Android 4.0.4 Software Update

– For those who bought any of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 models with Android 4.0.3, make sure you root it before upgrading to official Android 4.0.4 software update.– For those who will be upgrading to Android 4.0.4 using ClockworkMod recovery with a ZIP file, your recovery will not removed.– For those who will be upgrading to Android 4.0.4 using ODIN, read the following message posted by a XDA-Developers member, lgladen:Here’s how I solved it: On Odin, uncheck “Auto Reboot”. Install CWM6. When it goes green, unplug the tablet (still in “download” screen). Reboot manually into recovery (hold power + Vol. left, release power, hold vol. left until CWM screen comes up). I did this straight from the “download” screen. The tablet powered off after a few seconds of holding the power button, then came up to the samsung screen, then I released the power button and continued to hold the volume button until CWM6 loaded. I installed the cwm-root-gtab2.zip file. I selected YESwhen the “Stock Reboot Fix” question appeared. Rebooted from recovery, Successful root! Looks to me like the “fix” simply renames the install-recovery.sh, removing the “.sh” at the end. I have now rebooted a couple of times normally, and can still access CWM6 through the buttons.

Most walkthroughs are for 4.0.3 but for 4.0.4 you need to deselect autoboot in Odin as simple as that

Thanks teamandroid

Hey Matt,

Thanks for this update. Us rooters have to stick together. I have shut off automatic updates by freezing it with Titanium Backup, so I get no updates. But I do not want to miss Jellybean, Samsung is taking forever to give it up, still not available.

Since I am already rooted with CWM as you stated, v5.0.2.0, that is all that will install on this GT-P1533, I am using recovery 6.0.1.1 so I am good. Want CWM Touch, but still not available for this model. May not be important anyway.

Anyway, since already rooted at 4.0.4, I chanced an OTA update, thinking I could keep root or re-root it again, went through the entire procedure, but at reboot, CWM kicked in and gave choices, all of them NO except for one, "Yes go ahead". I was warned I could lose root. I was asked if wanted to backup root to save it. I took CWM advice on both choices. The update finished and upon reboot, the update was unsuccessful, CWM stopped it from potentially losing my root and I am glad for that.

My friend has the exact same tablet, we both got ours at BestBuy. She is not rooted and has no clue what root is, all for the better. We did her OTA update to see what it would do. Big download, reboot, wait, green Android bot on screen, so many percent done, yada, yada, yada. Rebooted her device, system setup all over again, but it retained her data so it was just skip, next, next, done. I went to her "About" screen to see what she got. Same as us, Android version 4.0.4, kernel 3.0.8, so we already have the current Samsung update now, with root.

Really, our only update choices now are ROMs. CWM has nice offerings, built right in. The Cyanogen ROMs are looking mighty fine to me. But we lose TouchWiz and all Samsung apps, and get Open Android with Cyanogen or AOKP, which was explained to me as "all the bells and whistles that Open Android has to offer". The stock CM will give little difference than what we have but nothing "Samsung". AKOP is all the ROM guys concerted efforts to making this Open Android as nice as it can be. Your choice.

I have been through all of the Samsung apps and software features and not ONE of them are worth a dam, anything you get from Samsung is available for free in the GooglePlaystore free, and really good stuff is dirt cheap. If you use Samsung Backup, you will lose it but frankly, with Titanium Backup, Clockwork Mod backups, and using Google logins for all backups and contacts, you have little, if anything at all, to lose by giving up Samsung apps and software.

Since rooting and staying strictly with the manufacturer's desktop is pretty hard to do, you must wait for each release to be rooted and released, then go through this all over again, or just go Open Android without Samsung. Google developed Open Android and they are the creators of it. Various manufacturer's and vendors have taken this and branded it with their own apps and limitations like Verizon/Motorola and Samsung. Verizon is pretty strict and we have to rely on exploits to root their systems. They have to be, as carriers for phone and Internet, they have valuable assets to protect from rooted devices such as Ad Free, we can now block all of their ads, and Wireless Tether for Root Users, I cannot live without that one! Verizon charges $20/Mo for the ability to give Internet to tablets and other devices from one's phone, this free app lets you do it for free without them knowing about it, stopping you from doing it, and thus, charging you for it. Try and "Hot Spot" or Tether without paying and you land at a web screen that says "Hey you can do this, just agree to pony up $20/Mo, Agree or Not Agreed?" The free app for root users bypasses all of that and it "just works".

Look, like you, I need a LOT of really good, on target advice and I have a couple of deadly serious Modders and Developer friends over at Droid X Forums. The tab is seriously "off topic" but I got one of my friends to spill the beans on how to do it and everything you need to know, with URLS to the files and how to pages at XDA. Plus, what to expect, how long it takes, what is involved, what you might lose or have to input all over again. You want the link? This is good reading and you are insane not to bookmark or save this stuff. I made a click-able pdf file as my guide to rooting and ROM'ming of the page.

Here is the link

That link should take you to page 4 "where the good stuff is" at the bottom of the page from Goose. That is my contribution. :driver:

Thanks for the feedback and advice!
