Help Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Wi-Fi Issue

compro

Newbie
I've got a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 that will no longer connect to wi-fi.

Wi-Fi turns on, but immediately turns itself off, and then back on, and goes into an endless loop.

The device is not rooted.

It's running Android 4.2.2, kernel version 3.0.31-1251263

I really don't want to have to factory restore the device. Please let me know if there's anything I can try to get the wireless functioning again.

Thanks in advance.

There are lots of things you can try, but I suspect a hardware error and that takes a trip to the shop.

I've powered it off and back on, I've forced a full restart by holding the power button down. I've tried clearing whatever settings I could and disabled or removed any apps that were recently added or looked like could be causing a conflict. I've turned airplane mode on and off. That's about all I can remember that I've done.

This may or may not help...

I've found that my p3113 gets better wifi reception when held upside down, with the Samsung label and charging port at the top.

I've also found that routers sometimes lock devices out and you need to forget the network on the device and power cycle the router to get past the authentication error.

Lastly, aosp custom roms all help with WiFi reception and speed. I'm not sure why though.

Im currently running the cyanogen mod 11 (android 4.4 kitkat) unofficial rom and have more than double the speed and reception of stock unrooted

Thanks, but the issue is that the wi-fi turns itself on and off, in an attempt to turn on in general. It never completes turning on and does not find any networks.

So you haven't power cycled the router/access point? That's wifi 101.

Just trying to help, but is the wifi you are trying to access at home? If so have you another device you can connect with via wifi and is that working Ok? (pins the problem down to your Tab). Can you access your router from another device (pc?)? If so check that you have no settings blocking the Tab.
Assuming all the above checks are passed OK, and it is the Tab, can you access another known good wifi access point elsewhere, and is the connection Ok? If yes, it's your router with a problem, if no, then it is your Tab.
The only options are a full reset and if that does not cure it, its a workshop job...(maybe a loose intermittent connection to the wifi antenna - but that is just a wild guess, but it is still a workshop job)

It's not the wireless router. I've power cycled it anyway, but it's not the router. It's the tablet which will not keep its wi-fi antenna turned on long enough to detect the network. Every other wi-fi device in the house works fine.

The Android tablet just cycles through wi-fi on and off.

The most common root cause of this issue is the phone not getting an IP address from the router/DHCP server. Connecting is basically a two-step process - connection, then assigning IP addresses to the phone.

Give your phone an unused static IP address that is valid on your LAN, gateway (usually the router), and DNS server address (if unsure use 8.8.8.8), then see if it maintains the connection.

I'm not advising you to leave it in that config if it works, but it should help you find the fault.

Check for mac address filtering on the router, firmware updates, etc.

If using WPA, switch to WPA2.

It doesn't matter that your other devices are functioning, as it has likely been some time since they last asked for a new address.

It's rarely the phone.

I can't. The network listing won't come up, so I cannot edit network configuration settings. If there's some magical way around that, please let me know.

Forget the network, add a new one, select Show advanced options, change IP settings from DHCP to Static. That will give you the fields to fill in.

I'm not sure you understand. I can't tell it to forget the network. I can't get it to do anything. If the wi-fi is off, the only thing there is it telling me to turn the wi-fi on. If I turn it on, it will just say "Turning on" and then turn back off.

I cannot see any saved networks. Advanced settings don't give me any options, because the wi-fi won't come on.

This is not a matter of not being able to connect to my network. It's a matter of the wi-fi antenna on the device not activating.

Ok, as it turns out I can't link via this app...

I promised a link on the YouTube video but I can't, sorry.
Anyway.... follow the repair guide in this forum and check for loose connections. If there aren't any then I'm willing to bet your antenna failed.

I had a 2 month period where my Tab 2 constantly was losing wifi connection. When I changed my router's setting from the busy channel 6 to the less busy channel 1 the problem disappeared.
