Help Galaxy Tab subtitle support

First post so be gentle.

I am going to buy a Galaxy Tab but before I do I would like to find out what the subtitle support of the built in video player is like. I know third party players are OK at this but I'd rather use the in built one if possible.

I have scoured the net for a definitive answer but no joy. I am interested in the player being able to support films with separate subtitle files. The main ones I encounter are *.srt (text based) and *.idx/*.sub (image based pairs) .

The films I watch aren't particularly high resolution and use *.avi containers using divx/xvid codecs and the occasional mkv container (h264? codec).

Thanks

The media player can read srt files, but they have to be named exactly the same as the video file. So if your video is named avatar.xvid.avi, the subtitle file has to be named avatar.xvid.srt.

If you're using an mkv file, the srt file has to be external -- it can't read the file in the mkv container.

OK, thanks for the answer. Pity it doesn't do idx/sub pairs. My old Samsung i8910 phone did so I was hoping the Tab might.

Converting to idx/sub to srt is a bit tricky. If anyone else is in the same boat I can recommend the freeware Subtitle Edit v3.0 for doing the conversion. The built in OCR is quite good.

You should test out the other subtitle formats. I only have srt files, so I don't know if idx and sub files will work.

If you're watching DivX movies with built-in subtitles you can turn them on and off - really handy if your'e deaf like me and need subtitles.

I had the same concern before buying my Tab - watching anime with embedded subtitles in .MKVs was one of the main reasons for buying it.

I googled a little and found this awesome video player, mVideoplayer - it has full support for embedded subtitle tracks in .MKV's (.ass I believe), and generally works awesome. And it's free, too! ;)

Thanks for that. I see it doesn't support idx/sub though. Not so important anymore as I also got Subresync working with IE8 again so I can convert idx/sub to srt pretty easily now, along with Subtitle Edit.

I reckon in the long run it might just be easier to learn a few foriegn languages.... (not).
