Try going to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications then press option and select Filter, then All. Find Gallery and press "Clear data", "Clear cache" and "Force stop", then try again.
If this fails, try opening it without the SD card inserted (maybe something on the card is causing a crash when Gallery tries to read it)
