Help Gallery, Internal memory and ext SD card.

Can someone answer this question I have?

I moved all my pictures from Phone to ext SD card, Now, I am organizing them into folders. Every time I create a folder (in Gallery) and move pictures to that folder it creates the folder in the phone memory. Then I have to move that folder back to sd card.

Is there a setting where I can tell the gallery to create folders on the sd card instead of internal phone memory ?

Camera is set to use Memory Card and pictures taken are saved to the Camera folder on the ext card.

As far as I know, there is no setting to control where New Album is created, using stock Gallery app.

You might want to look into some 3rd party gallery apps.

Don't create folders using gallery. Either put the card in a pc and create you folders or install a file explorer app so you can create the folders via that.

Thought of that as well, but that results if far more work.

While taking photos, you can't define which folder they go to. So even if you make one, can't be used.

Secondly, gallery doesn't show empty folders, so you can make them in advance, but can't use them.

Making a photo and save it to default, than just rename and move to SD, seem like least amount of work, than creative folder, take photo, move photo from default to custom folder, move folder to SD card, delete old folder (optional step).

Probably root and change default save directory is the only sensible option. Unless there are 3rd party apps that can do it without root.

Ive never used the gallery app to move files into folders but once youre familiar with an android file explorer, i cant imagine how its much more of an effort tbh

Well, here is the thing. In the Gallery I have my folders listed on the left, pictures on the right.
When I want to move a picture I just select it and drag it to where I want it. I can see the image that I am moving.
In a file explorer I see a file name, I don't know what image it is.

The whole point of being able to create and use folders in Gallery is to manage pictures easily.

The one thing missing here is to freely do this on the ext SD card. Why is there a default to internal memory that can't be changed?

Isn't the SD card there to store media files in the first place?

PS: I am rooted, if there is a way as someone mentioned to change this default I'd love to try it.

Thanks everyone !

Right. I understand man.
Well you can use the Link2Sd app (root only) to make the phone use your external sd in place of the internal sd but thats for everything as far as i know, apps and all.
Tbh though, pics arent so important to me but if they were, id avoid using the external sd to store them. The S3 is notorious for killing sd cards so you should really be backing them up regularly so why not just do it all on your pc where its really simple?

P.s, if you use a file explorer on the phone to create an empty folder on the external sd card, cant you then use the gallery to move pics into that and theyll stay on the external sd?

All valid points !
I do backup my pictures on a regular basis and any new picture taken get's sent to Dropbox automatically.

I like having my pictures on my phone as that is the "picture frame" that I always have with me. I don't carry my laptop around with me, lol.

Having pictures organized in Gallery makes it easier to show them. I know where what is.

If I create a folder with file explorer it is empty and the Gallery will not show that folder.

I think it is not the end of the world, I just wish I could do this all within one app.

e.g. take pictures, go to Gallery, create a folder and drag them in there. Done.

Have you tried the 3rd party gallerys out there? I never used the stock one but i know Quickpic, in its settings, can be pointed to what folders it should/shouldnt display so making an empty folder in the file explorer would be visible if you allow it in the settings. Not ideal i know lol
