So I have a rooted Droid X running 2.2. I did the latest update to a newer version of Froyo pushed out my Motorola and well now my bloody photo gallery won't open. Well it opens, pauses, then closes. This is consistently happens. What's going on? Anyone have an idea?

The new gallery is much more touchy with files. There's a file that's corrupted somehow and it's crashing the new gallery.

I installed the Nexus One 3d gallery alongside the regular gallery and I can usually pick out the bad movie file pretty easily (in won't play if you click it through the 3d gallery).

You can also copy your SD card to your PC, wipe the SD card and copy back some files at a time until you figure out the bad file.

Just had this pop up today. Formatting the SD will work too, but if you would rather not go through all that, here is what worked for me:
Go to Menu --> Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications -- All

Clear BOTH the Cache & Data for the following:
Gallery
Media Container Service
Media Storage

Clearing only Gallery won't work. You need to do all three.
Hold power button, Power Off. Power back on. Voila!!!

(It may take Gallery a few minutes to rebuild the thumbnail index, so be patient.)

I had this same problem so I did the following:

Media Storage
It seems to have fixed my gallery problems ... and also reset all my ring tones ... eek. I had to reset all my alert sounds and ring tones.

Even the tones I had set for my alarms changed to something different.

Had this problem again today ... had to follow the steps above again ... and reset my ringtones. What's the deal?

Someone else had this problem on another forum, reset the gallery using the method you used and within a couple of days, the sd card was FUBAR.

If I was you, I'd back up the files and pics from the sd card to your PC. Your card may be failing.

Just a FYI, but if you don't want to restart your phone just unmount then remount your sd card (settings~sdcard and phone storage~mount/remount sd card)

I deleted photos after moving them to my PC, (via the PC). I apparently had a bunch of thumbnails left on the card without links.

I follow the steps above and cleared the 3 apps, remounted the SD card and boom - Gallery rebuilt the thumbnail file.

I did this a while back too, and noticed my playlists were deleted, alarm music changed and ringtones reset! Now I forget how I got the music files to show up in the list of ringtones.
