Games and the 5.9.902 update

So I got my Bionic over last weekend through an upgrade deal at Costco for what I thought was a good price. This is an upgrade from my old HTC Eris. After playing around with this thing for 5 minutes, I couldn't believe I managed for this long on the Eris.

Games were actually playable, the phone didn't take ten seconds to display on the screen after it started ringing, and the GPS didn't lag on me. I did have one major issue. After the second day of having it, it wouldn't latch onto a 3g signal for more than a few minutes. After doing some reading, I found out that this was a common issue and the 5.9.902 update fixed it. I did the update and it does seem to have fixed it.

Now this has caused another problem. When I am playing games, they will frequently lock up and hang on one frame for a few seconds. I have so far experienced this with Angry Birds and and Dragon Fly (a Tiny Wings ripoff). I didn't have this issue prior to updating and wondered if anyone else had the same issue after the update. Perhaps someone knows what might be causing it and know of a fix?

Thanks for reading!

welcome to the bionic side of the world. i too loved my eris for a long time but this new toy is soooo much better. now to your problem, whenever i can't figure out why something is just not working quite right on this bionic, a simple hard reboot almost always fixes the problem. with the phone on, pull the battery, wait a few minutes and then reinstall and power back on. sometimes stuff just doesn't quite download like it should and the hard reboot will give it a sort of kick in the butt.

The more convenient way ... with the power on ... hold down the Volume Up/Volume Down/Power keys until the power menu appears and then disappears.

This dose a reset and re-boot. It is the same as a battery pull/Power On.

You are so right, that would be the easiest way.

I gave that a try both ways that were explained. No luck.

Angry Birds and the Tiny Wings clone aren't the main function of my phone. It's still irritating the hell out of me though. I want the phone to do what it's supposed to do without any hitches. What happens when whatever is causing this shows it's ugly face in other areas? I had enough problems with my Eris doing stupid things like this and slowly getting worse and worse with more and more problems until it was completely useless.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well something somewhere is interfering but I don't know what it might be. Only thing I can add at this point is factory data reset. Maybe Thom will be along shortly with a better suggestion.

Are the apps running out of the media area? If so, I wonder if that would affect play? (I would think that flash performance would be the same as internal flash storage, but you never know...)

Settings->applications->manage applications. Tap "media area" and look for the games. Is the checkbox checked for that app? If so, if you uncheck, tap "move to phone" - does that make the game run better?

I downloaded the _____ game and ran it. It did not halt.

You could try this ...
-- Charge it to 100% and then remove it from the charger. That will reset the battery history.
-- Run the app until you encounter the problem.
-- Run it some more.
-- Look at battery usage. What is using the battery?

This is probably a direct relation to the CPU usage and could account for the hangs.

GPS being used? Social Location is the known worst offender.
