Root GB and root questions; too much info - head is exploding

Hi all...been using info from this forum for a long time, but just registered.

I have a droid x which is currently on 4.5.573 rooted (one of the earlier leaked ones) and been that way for a few months. I like it but it's buggy in a few ways. I tried to keep up with changes and I really get into the ROMs and mods, but tbh, I don't have the time anymore to watch forums, read through thousands of posts, and install each new update. I'd like to, but I can't! It's like running backwards on an escalator; if I stop, I seem to fall way behind, and life just isn't allowing that kind of time commitment anymore.

So, I need a stable, rooted kernel with a stable and smooth ROM (if needed) that can last me a goodly long time. If I can get recommendations from people here, that'd be very helpful. Also, maybe a quick list of steps+links, cause after looking through some of the stickys and posts, I'm all sorts of confused about which version/rom can be upgraded from which one. For example, I can find the official 2 file update for 596, but not the rooted one that some of the posters mention.

A couple things that I'd like to make sure are in this new install, if possible:

1. Root access for clocking and certain apps
2. Good video recording and messaging (I've always had problems with recording videos, and some of my ROMs/kernels are better in terms of consistency and/or features, like easy resizing to other formats/sizes)
3. Smooth screen motion (usually I can get this just by disabling the moving background)
4. Don't care about themes too much
5. Works with extended controls or similar app if possible; that app saves me a ridiculous amount of battery when needed

Thanks for your help! I know this seems like the lazy method; I've spent a lot of time keeping up-to-date in the past, but right now I'm just overwhelmed by the number of options, guides, and posts out there and need some friendly advice.

First off, welcome to AF! You sound like me not even a month ago. I was asking similiar questions about rooting and roms. I'll try to answer your questions the best I can (I'm not as informed as some of the veterans around here)

First off, for the most stability, the consensus I've gotten is that you want to install one of the Blur based roms. I personally am using Darkslide X. It's fast, everything seems to work fine. Battery life is great. I really am loving it. The only downside is that it lacks alot of features that the 2init roms offer. But it seems those new features come with bugs, or extra steps necessary to get them fully functional. Darkslide X just works. There are others that are reportedly good as well (Shujii has been the most talked about. I was going to make a thread to ask why it's any better than Darkslide, but I suppose I should just flash it myself if I really am that curious)

In terms of your rooted GB question, there is currently no way to root GB once it's installed. The process to get on stock GB rooted would be as follows:

1. SBF Back to Froyo
2. Use z4root to root Froyo
3. Install the 2 Part Rooted GB update

From here, you would have a fully stock GB, and be rooted. If you wanted to install a custom rom from this point it would be as simple as booting into CWR and clearing your caches + installing.

Now I'm not sure how this new GB patch that came out effects this process. My understanding is that there is a new 2 part GB install that gets you fully up to date, but I have no clue if you can install a custom rom like Darkslide X on top of it. My assumption is no, but maybe somone else can clarify that.

the new gb offers the updated radio, once on that radio it doesnt go away, so you should be able to install a custom rom overtop of it, i would think, for cm7 based roms on the 2init feature, we have a seperate install that updates us to the newest radio, so really Darkslide X will work wonders, Apex RC2 was amazing, but it looks like it was abandoned once the 2init roms came to light, i havent tried Shuji as i dont care for GB roms anymore, i will gladly sacrifice battery life for more features, and a true pure gingerbread experience that they offer.

depending on what you chose, your questions will always be answered, everyone here is eager to help others and become the go-to guys, it just takes time and eventually after learning about things you will quickly be there. I only started doing this stuff in december-january, or maybe even february, we all adapt as quickly as we can. some faster than others, its what you pick up on, and learn, that will make you a seasoned veteran

Thanks for the replies! I know people here are always willing to help.

Just so I get a good feel for where I should go...a long term stable setup that you would recommend is to go to rooted GB (by way of SBF -> root -> 2 part update), then go with the Darkslide X ROM. The DS from before was actually my favorite ROM I tried when I was bouncing through ROMs about 6 months ago, so this is a good direction.

I'll try it and see where it leads.

hello everyone,

I am very new to Android Forums and i really need some help. I have a droidx with android 2.3.3 running version 4.5.602 and I want to root it so I can tether, increase the fps on video, and overclock. I need to tether because I'm in college and Brighthouse internet wants to charge me $55/month for internet when i have a droidx. Please Android Community, I need your help! I have no idea what any of the acronyms mean on the other posts, and I dont know what a Kernel or ROM is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, those are the correct steps you should take. I wouldn't rule out trying Shujii either. For some reason it's being talked about ALOT here, and while nobody seems to specifically say what advantages it has over Darkslide, they seem to really like it. I just personally havn't tried it yet, and I think Darkslide is great and haven't found a reason to change yet.

Am I understanding you correctly in that the NEW TBH 2 Part GB (that just came out) can be installed over rooted Froyo INSTEAD of the old 2 Part GB, and then after that any of the Blur Based roms can be installed without issues? Also what advantage does the new radio offer?

There is an app called PDANET which would allow you to tether without rooting, just so you know. But as I stated above, in order to root your phone you would first need to SBF back to Stock Froyo, root that, and then install the 2 part GB over that. There is a sticky in the DX Root forum that very simply breaks down the process. It's what I used, it even covers how to install Liberty afterwards (or any rom for that matter since the steps are the same)

Edit: SBF Guide , PDANET

Bigbabys,

Thank you for replying. The tethering options available without rooting, limit the way internet is used through the phone, so i want to root it to gain full access. Also, what does SBF mean? What is Liberty? what is a ROM?

Thank you for your time.

1. SBF - This takes your phone back to completely stock the way it came from the manufacturer(sp?). This will erase everything on your phone. It will then be stock Froyo. You do this because currently there is no exploit to gain root access in Gingerbread. After you use z4root (a 1-click application that grants you root access) you will be on rooted Froyo. From here you can install a custom 2 part Gingerbread ROM (see below) that allows you to keep your root access from Froyo. Besides keeping the root access, this ROM is exactly the same as what you are running now.

2. Liberty is a ROM (see further below)

3. A ROM is a custom version of the Android OS. With tweaks and modifications. Often removing alot of the "bloatware" that comes with your phone.

Once you get rooted GB installed you can do everything you listed above (Overclock, Tether for free) installing a custom ROM is optional.
