Root general question

my wife is still using an optimus v on virgin mobile. it's starting to get sluggish bc . I want to get her an awe but she uses foxfi a decent amount an her train ride to tether to her kindle. I havent been able to get foxfi to work on my awe.

so as far as I can tell, to tether with an awe you need to root it, which I've never done. but I'm wondering is this a stable solution? if I root it and get a tether app that works will it work consistently or am I going to be hearing a lot of gripes in the future about "my tethering stopped working again"?

Once you root you should be able to tether just fine. If you flash the 4.4.4 cyanogenmod rom, after rooting, you won't even need to download an app for tethering.

what about updates? is there a way to keep them from screwing with my setup if I stay with stock rom or should I def flash to something else?

Once u rooted and off stock ROM u will not get any updates from the carrier
