Help General questions thread/discussion (New to Android/M7?)

Hi,

I have two questions, one about going abroad and one about using an old device.

My current device is an HTC One, doing the OTA update right now.
My previous device is a Motorola Droid Bionic.

I'm planning to travel to Italy soon, and would like to have my phone to use as a GPS and to post pictures. However, I don't want to pay exorbitant fees for roaming. Is disabling mobile data and international roaming enough to stop any charges?

My other question also relates to my trip. I would like to use my old phone to save audio files to listen to during a tour. However, I just reset to factory settings, and now my phone is telling me that I have a new number and the phone is ready to be activated. I don't want to activate my old phone - is there a way to avoid it?

Thanks for any help!

You ought to be OK with your plan to disable mobile data and international roaming.

If you're wanting to use your phone just as a camera and personal data assistant, and no phone calling, you ought to be able to turn on airplane mode and then turn on WiFi and GPS.

That works fine on my HTC but I'm running an older one so please test that out on yours before you go if that interests you. If you're not planning on calling, that approach has the added benefit of saving your battery life.

As for your Bionic, I'm stumped, sorry. Typically a factory data reset leaves you at the setup wizard the first time in and just hitting the home button can skip it. See if you can get to the settings and put it in airplane mode to get it off of the cellular network and reboot (it ought to stay in airplane mode) and see if that makes it shut up. If that doesn't work, maybe someone else will know.

Welcome to the forums! :)

I've noticed that the GPS does not work for the camera while in airplane mode (I know, turn on airplane mode, turn on GPS after that). It works until you have to wake the phone up (time out or hitting the power button), then the camera no longer recognizes that the GPS is enabled.

the latest update may have fixed this, haven't checked, but you may want to check before you rely on this.

When texting I used to be able to click on the microphone icon on the keyboard and speak my message and it would be written and I would send it.
Now the microphone is there, but I cannot get it to work. Am I missing something in settings.
Please forgive my ignorance.

HTC ONE m7

Hi, as far as I'm aware there isn't anything in Settings to enable/disable voice typing. It works ok on my M7, although when I'm using the qwerty keyboard, which is almost always the microphone shares the 'full stop' soft key and requires a 'long press' to invoke. (If I select 'phone' keyboard in Settings the microphone has a dedicated soft key which responds to a 'tap')

You should also get a keyboard icon in the notification bar when you are in 'text input' mode. If you pull down the bar you will see 'Choose input method' - tapping that will give a 'Google voice typing' option.

Hope this helps.

How do i add a picture to someone in my contacts on HTC one. It`s not a Facebook contact, I just need to add a picture to a friends number.

When you open the contact the blank area where their picture would be will have an icon for the camera. click that and it will enable you to select a picture from different sources. I believe the picture has to be on the phone already but I could be wrong.

I used the default Notes application on my Verizon HTC One to record an important conversation with the expectation that it would be easy to transfer to my PC for archival. Unfortunately I can't seem to find it via the Backup Assistant program and I have no idea where the phone stores this information internally, which makes surfing folders for it a huge chore.

Can anyone tell me a sure-fire way of finding this type of file and backing it up on my PC? It's very important to me. Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you talking about "audio recorder" app? I I'm on sprint so could be called something different.

What options do you have in this app? "share", "rename", etc.?

With a file Explorer, navigate to /storage/ext_sd/My Documents/My Recordings

Again I'm on sprint, stock non rooted and locked.

Due to the way Google has locked up folder permissions, and if you are not rooted, it's best to plug the device to the computer and drag and drop like you normally do with similar tasks on the computer.

do u mean Backup & reset
If the Backup account is HTC account,
it only backup the accounts, passwords, bookmarks, messages, contacts,
and apps daily over wi-fi.
So your pictures, movies, even record communication voice files,
the Backup & reset system doesn't support it.

Suggest an app "Automatic call Recorder" ,it can link to Dropbox,
and after doing setting process, it will automatically backup upon the cloud.

I have a Audio Book that in MP3 from for many years. I storage my audio boook collect on my pc and copy books over that i want to listen too. in this case a file that is a length of 01:19:34 on my pc(viewed by right clicking, Properties, Details) is 00:01:21 on my phone. Odd this is while play it will run over the 1:21 but if i touch it is move on the the next very shorted file. I copied over new files but doesn't fix it issue.

This is the first time I've tried to listen to this book on this phone. But i know i didn't have this problem on my razor

Any ideas on to what going on and how to fix it?

are you rooted?
what carrier?
whats the latest android software?
what audio program are you using to play the file?
what folder are you sending the file to on the phone?
how are you transferring the file over?

are you rooted? No
what carrier? Verizon
whats the latest android software? 4.4.2
what audio program are you using to play the file? Smart Auio Book or the android Play Music
what folder are you sending the file to on the phone? \Internal storage\DCIM\100MEDIA
how are you transferring the file over? USB Copy paste

perhaps the encoding of the file is the culprit.

if other files play normally and at the proper length, it could be the wrapper or transcoding of this file the android system does not like.

from what i am reading, everything is performing normally. you are not getting any error messages or other hiccups.

the only other suggestion i can suggest is to post up the file to another android user and have them test it on their phone.

you can also send me the file if you are open to that and I can load it up on my htc one max and test.

but really the only other suggestion since all other files work is to test this file on another device.

Hi everyone... I receive voicemails for work through email- when I click on the file it downloads the audio into my music file...so when I'm playing music on my phone...random work voicemails are played....can someone please tell me how I can change this? It has drove me insane trying to figure it out.

Thank you soo much in advance.

just to be clear, these voicemails are not playing AT THE SAME TIME as other songs are being played correct?

and you are using the stock htc music player?

So your issue is your voicemails are being mixed in with your REAL sound files yes?

so if I am correct on my ASSumption, you will need to move the voicemails to a separate folder YOU create (you will need to plug up your phone to a computer using USB) and label it "voicemails" or somesuch. you will then HIDE the file by putting a period on the file. this "period" (.) will make the folder hidden from the player.

food for thought:

Yes, I'm using stock music player.

Yes, they are mixed all through my real music files.

Is there by chance a thread on how to make this new file and stuff as I'm kinda dumb when it comes to this stuff, but can follow instructions well. :)

Thanks for your reply and sorry I put the question in the wrong place. :)

Hi,

I posted a link that will help.

There are videos on YouTube that will visually show you.

To get started, you need to USB your phone to a computer
A hard drive icon should populate as a list of drives
Get in there and add a folder call it ".nomedia" and include the (.) as denoted in quotes to your storage card

Drag /drop files there

More info at the above link or check YouTube for visuals.

Ok I must be dumber than I thought because I simply can not figure this out nor can I find a video on youtube....think I should just give up and deal with the voicemails in my music...lol

Thank you soo much for trying to help me!

I also just remembered, the phone usually has a PIN lock on it. Yesterday for a certain period of time, before I changed the PIN myself, the lock screen no longer presented with the PIN number... just strange to the home screen.

ok, so is it back to showing the lock screen?

you were not hacked. these phones are computers and from time to time glitches can occur just like on your laptop or desktop. probably a simple soft boot of the OS will fix any anomaly.
