no risk there's always a way back with lg update tool ^_^
The only way to find out if it is true ( I'm sure there will be tons of problems without modifying the sources) is, you must compile and test it out yourself. If a dev would like to make changes and compile these sources, to test some things out. I will be glad to use my device to test on.

either way, with cwm its safe
do a nandroid, flash the test kernel. if it doenst boot use hardware keys to get into cwm and restore your nandroid. flash the delooper.
just for teh giggle sof it all id suggest making a repacked one with very minor changes and then restoring your nandroid to ensure it is backing up and recovering your boot kernel

When I exchanged my connect due to malfunctions the replacement they gave me already had the zv9 update in it (its still reads zv8 though???). The LG updater tool won't work on my phone, I've tried and re-tried to use it on my phone and the tool keeps telling me the phone is already updated and there's no need to update the device. When I've tried the recover device option it's get about half way through and stops, every time. So no there's not always a way to get back, at least not on all of them. I'm sure the ones they sell now come with the update as well, so IMO if you got the first batch of connects you're probably safe with that option, anyone who bought the phone later or had to exchange it for whatever reason, we're all screwed on the updater tool fall back =(
adb pull /proc/config.gz
