I've been a prepaid Sidekick user for the past 3 years. Even if the Sidekick is outdated and doesn't hold a candle to smartphones, unlimited text and internet for roughly ~40 days of usage is really, really worth the money.
However, like I said, the Sidekick is really outdated now. It doesn't seem like a very good phone to do networking with. To me it just seems like a phone for children in high school; if I saw a business person out in the real world using a Sidekick I would be tempted to not take him seriously.
When I saw the MyTouch Slide it looked like the perfect phone for me. I was originally looking at the MT3G but the lack of a physical keyboard really drew me away, especially after hearing what my friends have said about the phone. I was also tempted to get a G1, but the phone is a few years old now and I would feel stupid to get into a 2 year contract and watch as the successor comes out later this year or something.
Taking this into consideration I have some questions.
1) What do you guys think of the MyTouch Slide? It doesn't have quite the computing power that I hoped my next phone would have. I'm the kind of person who uses the internet for youtube and graphically heavy websites, would the phone have trouble keeping up with this? How is the screen? Can you notice pixels? Do they have these on display in T Mobile stores in the US yet?
2) I was also considering phones like the Desire, Legend, iPhone 4, and Nexus one. the iPhone 4 is almost completely ruled out because I really don't like AT&T's service and it's waaaaayyyy too expensive. I wish Apple took a more open market approach, iPhone 4 on T Mobile would be win (for me atleast). Nexus One simply costs too much and the rates are really silly imo. I hate how they marketed the phone and have it set up to where you can only buy it online w/ these crazy rate plans. The Desire & Legend look like excellent phones, but I'm not sure when they will release and for how much.
3) Is it possible to use todays smartphones on prepaid plans? For instance, if I wanted to buy a Nexus One w/o contract and use it prepaid, how limited would I be? I would rather buy the phone outright and use it prepaid, but companies act like you HAVE to be on their network to use the simplest features. It baffles me how to this day only the Sidekick has a good prepaid set up.
I'd like to hear your responses to these questions. I'm new to the whole smartphone and android scene. I've done some research on the MyTouch Slide and I've only heard good things about it. 2.2 is rumored to come out for it soon after launch. I'm just scared that the lack of processing power will result in the phone running 2.2 very poorly. That would be the worst. I really don't want to get stuck into a two year contract; I'd love to have more freedom to buy any phone and use it prepaid, but at the same time I want to have access to ALL of the phones features.
