Getting control of actively running apps

Anybody got a link on how to reign in apps that just won't stop turning themselves on?

I'm noticing Google Talk, Maps, Yahoo Mail, Google+, YouTube, Voicemail, etc. are all running, all the time, even if I use a task manager to stop them. I've checked they're settings, and I've set notifications to off, sync to manual when available, and update to once daily if there's no other option.

Where's the check box for "only launch this app if I actually launch it"? Even with Juice Defender set to advanced and minimal syncing/notifications my battery life is abyssal, I'm considering that expensive battery pack that comes with the new back piece. But it seems like there should be some way to tell apps not to start by themselves, like going into msconfig on Windows and deselecting which apps launch by default.

Yoou can try this. Settings- development - and go down to apps and check kill task immediately after exit and see if that helps

this looks like an area of settings that could genuinly help. I've checked the box "don't keep activities" which says it will "destroy every activity as soon as the user leaves it" and I've also limited background processes to 4 at a time. That should be enough.

I just got that error message that USB can't provide enough juice to charge this thing - that's crazy. Hopefully this will help.

well, that's a no go. The setting wants to kill my 'GO Launcher'... which is strange because as the user I'm not "leaving it", it's essentially the one app I'd like to keep running. If Sense allowed 5x5 grids then I wouldn't need the Go Launcher, they give you a giant screen, then put 1/4 inch of blank space between everything...

They need a place for exceptions. There's no reason for Maps to be on when GPS is disabled, and no reason for Yahoo mail to be active when I disabled sync. No need for Google+ to be running when I've disabled everything I can with it...

I really don't get why they won't let you specify which apps are allowed to run in the background. Even when I limit background processes to 2 (4 is the max in the setting) there are still 12 apps running. Voicemail is running (empty mailbox, and i'm not checking messages right now), Facebook is running, even though I've tried to disable any syncing or notifications. "Talk" is running even though I'm not using it and tried to disable everything on it.

I get the idea that the people who design these things have never used them. Less than 1/2 day battery life with normal usage, no ability to charge on USB due to such heavy draw... and I'm running the stock ROM, haven't hacked anything or messed around with nitty gritty things.

The only way I ever found to make an app not run was to clear data in settings > apps > whatever app.

The problem with this is you'd have to do it every time you quit the app, and by doing so it deletes your settings and saved login information.

Edit*
As for your charging issue, make sure you're not using a front usb port on your computer. Some computers put out less power to the front USB ports, try one on the back of the computer. If you're using a laptop I have no ideas.
