Getting my Hero!

So I'm coming back to Android and getting my Hero soon. Is there anything I NEED to know before I get it? Pros and cons of rooting? Must have apps? Bugs and fixes? Or anything else I should know? Thanks!!!

Root if you can, you'll be way happier;) Simple as that

Ok, here's a question. Does just rooting do anything or is it what you can do after you root, ie custom roms, that makes the phone better?

You can do pretty much anything you want to the phone.

Root: stay with stock 2.1 and get rid of sprint bloatware and others....

Root: flash a custom rom of your liking, ie: Sense UI (like you have now) or AOSP (vanilla android OS)

Root: 2.2 Froyo, something the Hero won't see unless you root

Read these forums and I'm sure many will answer any question you have;)

Root and install a legend based rom like Zen rom. Same feel as stock, more speed.

Yeah, his comment was unwarranted. The best practice is ignore posts like that. ;)

Anyway, welcome back to the Android fray. I agree with everyone else in that you should just root your Sprint HTC Hero right away and try out some of the custom ROMs that are available. :)

Thanks to the ones helping. ;) I try to ignore things but it's so hard! FYI, I did read the forums but I didn't understand most of it. Root and rom and kernel and nightlies. Urg. I will get it. Just have to take my time and figure it out. I always do. :) Anyway any apps that are a must to have?

Don't forget to report them too

Got my Hero today! Woot woot! Anyway, quick question. I do plan on rooting but just because I was curious I checked the firmware and it's running 1.5. I clicked update and it said no firmware updates are available! What the...? Is there something wrong with it?

You will have to run the ruu yourself with your computer or take it to a Sprint store and they will do it for you;)

If you plan on rooting, you CAN root 1.5 just look ccapasso thread in the Spint Hero all things root

nice.. welcome back...
where u go?? and why are you coming back?

why would the new Hero have 1.5? is this a new phone? I heard all new Heros come with 2.1.

if you dont mind the $10 /month fee extra... you might be more happy with the EVO or Epic.

Hello! :)

I had a Moment but got rid of it for another Blackberry. Hubby got an i1 and I played with it so much I decided to come back to Android! My upgrade isn't up until Nov so I grabbed a cheap used Hero off of ebay to tide me over. ;)

Got the moment last Nov, got a new BB on ebay around March and just got my used Hero on ebay so I still have an upgrade in Nov. I like it better because it's smaller, I don't have the mute/hang up problem (they have an app for that now!) and I'm really diggin the virtual keyboard! I got the Moment over the hero in the first place because of the hardware keyboard but it was really cheap and started to separate. My biggest problem with the Hero right now is the keyboard lag and battery, like everyone else. I have rooted and removed some stock apps but still haven't pulled the trigger and gone custom rom. I like the OS. ;)

awesome!

for the lag.. have you tried the 2.2 ROMs? they have have reduced the lag to very unnoticeable amount.

this is the one I am using:
[ROM] (UPDATED 22-SEP) FroYo 2.2 - CM6 Extremely Blue, BlackMod AND Vanilla versions - xda-developers
