So I see that the official JB update is out and I want to install it. This thread shows my previous post and how I used a JB build to update phone.

I have d/l this file How Do I Update My Samsung Galaxy S

Yeah dude, here's the instructions and md5 sums for the rom linked above, it's definitely quality:
[ROM][ODIN][TAR]SPH-D710BST GC01 (GC01 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock)

You lost your ability to do backup and restore because when it comes to the S2, if it says "stock kernel", it does not support backup and restore in recovery (or in any program that utilizes these functions). For you this will be true with both GA10 and GC01. There's a modified GC01 kernel out there with custom recovery that should do backup and restore but it's pretty early in development and only the 0.1.0 version isn't buggered. My phone refuses to flash it for some reason.

I use this personally. Rwilco12's Android Repository - Downloads

You can chose if you want the rooted or unrooted.
The release found in the link is the official Kies release. (:

So this is what I used doing a full rooted install. It installed fine and I used Kies to restore my contacts and messages. The email settings I could not restore with Kies but it was easier to put back my 3 accounts gmail, verizon and hotmail using needing just name and password and it found other settings needed.

One problem that was there before I installed new ROM and still here is using ROM Manager to make a backup I get errors "E-failed to verify whole-file signature" error saying that "e-signature verification failed " which leads me to this thread.
E: failed to verify whole-file signature - ROM Manager - Samsung Galaxy S II Stable Mod - CyanogenMod Forum

I think my "CWM" clockwork recovery is messed as it does not have the options it used to have like "fix file permissions".

How can I fix my clockwork recovery?

From some research it looks like it need to reinstall agart kernel again. Just not sure which one to use.

I do not recommend using ROM Manager.

Your recovery is tied to the kernel you use on this phone. CWM is not a separate stand alone thing on this phone. There is a recovery kernel available for GC01 if you want recovery on it, and it is easy to flash in with Odin.
