Getting Spammed via Notifications?

PeteCress

Android 4.2.

Somebody seems to be using updates/notifications to spam me.

Opening up the home screen, I see this red star at bottom right just to the left of "Good": http://tinyurl.com/c88ayck

When I open up notifications, I see the "Win $1 Million...." spam: http://tinyurl.com/cuuwlph

Can anybody tell me what to uninstall/disable to stop this?

FWIW, I am about ready to root this thing once I can establish that rooting it will not interfere with the coming 4.1 rollout.

It's aggressive advertising, pushed by ad networks like AirPush, Leadbolt etc. and caused by a recently installed or updateted app on your phone.

This thread could help you to catch the culprit app ...

Bingo! Thanks.

AirPush Detector caught it: "FLV Video Player".

But I can't get *too* indignant because they are right upfront with it in their product description in Play Store. I just didn't read it closely enough - being familiar and comfortable with the more-or-less standard little banners/boxes on the windows of freebie apps.

But never even thought that anybody would overtly abuse messaging to spam their users. Covertly, yeah.... it was a problem with Windows messaging for awhile.... but overtly?

Maybe it's just me.... but I'm a little crazy on the subject of telephone soliciters too...

Aaah ... should have seen your Android 4.2. ;)

Jelly Bean introduced the feature to indentify the app which created a notification and disable the app's ability for notifications.

Do long press on the advertising's notification, that should pop up an "App Info" button you can press which will tell you which app has created that notification.
Also from there you can conveniently disable the app's ability for notifications, or if you want, uninstall the app.
