I have a samsung i7500 and need to know a few things. Coming form a symbian OS i'm used to a little more control over my phone so...

1. Can I install the new 1.6 sdk on this phone (which has 1.5 currently) without having to wait for a specific manufacturer release?

2. Will installling an sdk straight from the android website overwite ugly propriety start up processes (e.g. 'brand name' logo flash before OS boot).

3. I must be missing something obvous here: How do you un-install apps on this phone because there's no option for it under the app manager tool >.<

I doubt i'll get answers to all these questions but hopefully it'll be a start in removing the bloatware that comes pre-installed.

Note: the samsung pc studio program usually used to update this phone doesn't work for me (most likely a conflict with the x64 architecture) so being able to manually update would be very helpful :)

simple answer is no for this one, you have to wait although some rom cookers might be able to integrate some features

no as thats not what the sdk tools are for. adb will gain you access but not allow you to overwrite things without you having knowledge of what you are doing. (i mean serious knowledge)

2 ways
1. easiest way is to install an app manager (loads in the market)
2. using androids built-in app manager "Settings>Applications>manage applications> click on application you want to uninstall or force close

1. Nope, you'll have to wait until 1.6 becomes officially available for Galaxy (might be a long wait), or you can experiment with custom ROMs (see the thread "MoDaCo Custom Rom Based on IH8").

2. The branding is part of the firmware. You can re-flash your phone with different firmware versions without including branding, so you don't need the sdk.

3. Yes you missed it. I don't have my phone handy, but in Settings->Applications you can select an app and there should be an "Uninstall" button. It's supposed to be straightforward.

Note: Operating instructions for "NPS" is as follows:
1. Chuck it in the bin! NPS doesn't work for anyone. Period.
2. Use "Odin" (search this forum) for firmware updates.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not suprised i'll have to wait for samsung to release a new their own version of android. But perhaps I can try the firmware flash idea. Does anyone know where I can get the latest US or UK vanilla flavoured version?

As for uninstalling unwanted 3rd party software. I serioulsy I can't find any uninstall button (and i've been tinkering with OS's since win 3.11). Only have the force stop button. I'll even take a pic if you like but there is definately no uninstall button here...Perhaps a combination key press or maybe i'll just call samung.

ok 2 things here

there is no us software for the galaxy as its not for us release (you will be getting the behold 2)
as for flashing latest firmware there are many posts about it here with various guides on how to do it, its important that you read them and become aware of the pitfalls and quirks that can occur with flashing so that you know exactly what you are doing (this is why im not just going to link you)
the latest version is II5 and the software you use is called odin

the second one sounds as if you are trying to uninstall things that are part of the firmware build which will be locked so you cannot uninstall it.
programs you install from market can be uninstalled from market or from the area weve stated.
 
I dunno about the apps being part of the firware build. Although I wouldn't be suprised that the vendor made e.g. a game that only works on their network part of such a build. Especially useful when you don't use their network and thus can't use said game lol.

I will definately be trying to change the firmware, short of that i'll just return the phone.

Whats even more annoying is the fact that the pc studio software (whilst installed) won't even recognise my phone, essentially blocking all official channels usually used to update/alter the phone.

im sure that game would vanish if you flashed with a non csc version of updated firmware.

nps should recognise the phone if youve followed some of the nps guides here but it will be pretty useless to you as
1. you cannot sync with it
2. you are not in a country that supports the device there for flashing to an updated csc is not likely to work via NPS

untill samsung sort it your only method is odin.
 
You need the latest version of NPS:

Install the software first, then enable 'usb debugging' on your phone (settings -> application -> development)

Plug in your phone, and if windows can't find the drivers point it to the drivers in c:\program files\Samsung\New PC Studio\USB Drivers

Then launch NPS and click the update button. If you're region is supported it will update your phone to the latest (II5). Remember you'll loose all the information on your phone.

If you're not in a suported region (i guess you're in the US?) select 'english' when you install NPS, but then select germany as the country. You'll get updated to the latest german build. Its petty clean.

Alternativly you can use Odin (search the forum), with the II5 (latest) firmware. Remove cache.img from the tar file and you'll have stock firmware without any customisations.

Yeah, i downloaded the latest version of nps and when i hit the update button it has an entry 'select the mobile phone'. So I click that and...nothing.

It doesn't list any mobile phones connected even though the phone is connected and nps recognises the onboard memory etc. So it isn't even a case of country of origin, simply bad progaming... >.<
