I'm on the same boat man... i think I'll try to stay away from htc after this .. sense is great but this s-on/off thing is just frustrating.. i have had a few android devices ( Optimus V, Nexus S 4G, Nook Color, and Evo V ) this htc phone has been the most pain ..

Here is what I did:
Using 4ext I backed up my phone (Harmonia 3.16)
I restored the Phone to factory by running the RUU program which wiped and reflashed everything. The phone was exactly as I bought it.
I went into settings and checked for an update which then downloaded and installed with no problem.
I then had to install TRWP 1.1 recovery using fastboot.
I then used the super user patch to get root again, then reinstalled the 4ext recovery. Then I restored my backup.

Worked fine with S-on. Sorry I don't have the time today to write a walkthrough, but if you folllow this thread it'll tell you how to do the RUU portion and how to install the recovery and get root again.

Honestly the phone is much better with the updates - I highly recommend them. Especially if you get a rom with the OTA system updates (Harmonia or Midnight both have them now)

Im S-On and using Mobster ROM. If I wait until a kindly dev incorporates the update into a ROM, could I not just flash the new ROM and have the update install that way?

Im confused because the stock ROM has S-On yet that ROM can flash the radio so why not as part of a Mobster ROM etc?

Thanks

well thanks guys im temped to try s-off again i think i know what went wrong, can i do s-off on midnight rom ? if not which one can i do it on. sorry for all the noob questions i just seems some times its hard to find a straight answer on the forums

hboot, radio, prl, etc sit in a different area of memory on the phone. They can't simply be incorporated into a rom. It's S-off or nothing. It's really not that hard to S-off though.

I did it with stock rom, after gaining root. You should either do that, or Harmonia. I've heard anything else can cause issues. (Harmonia being similar enough to stock that it's ok, but others deviate too far)

Thanks. Then I guess I'm in the same boat as the OP. Im S-On and using Mobster so where do I go from here to gain S-Off? Do I have to wipe my Mobster ROM etc?

I guess I still dont understand how a new, untouched phone can install the update yet a phone with S-On using a custom ROM cannot. Arent they basically the same thing hardware wise?

Thanks all.

You can make a nandroid backup of your data for when you switch back to Mobster's, but you will need to flash either the stock rom or Harmonia to do S-Off. Here are the instructions for S-Off: Unlimited.IO

Bottom line is because your using a custom recovery.

WOW i got s-off it took me 4-5 tries but it wasnt as hard as its seem when you read about it plus reading the stuff while controlbear is running is pretty funny also i used a paperclip i cut to size and wrapped with tape it worked a lot better :D

Nice job - what ROM did you use?

i used harmonia 3.17 to get s-off but now im back on midnight im using midnight 1.3.7

any wanna help with updating the prl ?

I would enjoy the new s-offed phone, prl updates provide the least bang for the amount of time and effort required. Usually none.

So you:

Went to Harmonia 3.17
Did not 'unroot' the phone
Acquired the update through the phones UI
Restored your Midnight ROM and apps from a backup

Sorry for all the questions but I want to get this right.

Thanks!

No, he was on Harmonia when he ran juoponutbear to get s-off, then he was able to flash the radio in bootloader and then went back to Midnight using his nandroids. You have to be on stock rom and stock recovery to take the ota, otherwise you s-off and do it through the bootloader.

anything else i need to do or just flash the update

Nope just put the image on the root of your sd card and go into bootloader mode by pressing power and volume down and when it gets detected just push volume up, when it's done it'll tell you to press power to reboot, remove the image from the sd card and you're all set.

good to hear its doable on harmonia rom. im harmonia 3.17, bootloader unlocked, twrp 1.1.1... i might try it tonight ..

Just achieved S-off, now will share the experience. Don't let term Stock RUU scare u as it is in bold and underlined, in Step 2 of bear guide. I still don't know what it means. i feel like its just a way to return to bone stock. Just follow the bear guide, the "trickiest" part was the wire thing. I actually poked the wrong hole for a good two mins ... then realized it was wrong.. Switched to the right hole then controlbear continued and told me it failed. Program exited and i just started it back up again and this time when asked to do wire trick i only had to do it like once. rebooting was kinda weird .. at first it wouldnt boot past Harmonia loading screen, i simply just turned off phone and restarted. Once booted up i went and pasted PG86IMG to the root of sd and booted back in bootloader and flashed the update by pressing Y when prompted. The sd card used is still fine.
