This is a thread for discussion about the custom kernel I made. I'll update this post later with details, releases, bugfixes, and stuff like that. Source is here vm696-pernel - Custom kernel for vm696 android phone - Google Project Hosting and https://code.google.com/p/ls696/source/list

what do these kernels do?

Hey ktb,

Do you think the few kernel issues some people were having may come from the zip just overwriting the boot partition? Wonder if you format the mmcblk0p9 partition before you write new kernel over it.

Not sure just a thought!

No, it shouldn't be a problem. The boot image that is flashed in these ZIPs is the same exact size as the boot partition. There isn't really a reason to format/erase the partition first.

There is no "format" for the boot and recovery partitions. Formatting implies that there is a filesystem in place. These partitions don't have any filesystem. You could fill them with 0s before flashing a new image over them. But the images I am providing are the exact same size as the partition, so all your 0s will be overwritten anyways.

Are there any other issues reported besides the battery at 100% issue?

is there any stock boot img for sprint

is there any stock boot img for sprint

Certainly, but I don't have it. If someone wants to pull the boot.img from their Sprint Optimus Elite, I'll create a flashable ZIP for it. I'm not sure it would be helpful at this time.

Has there been any announcement of an update for the sprint version? I've only seen people talking about the zv9. On the LG website, there is source code for zvE and zvD along with the zv9. Maybe you guys are getting the QuickMemo crap, too?

What advantages do we gain with this Kernel? Overclocking, performance, or what? That wasn't stated lol. And what's the "dmesg spam" thing?

Right now, this is pretty much stock with the added sysfs file to display your msl. The .bin file I uploaded is a raw partition image. cwm doesn't know how to install it. You can use dd to write it to /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 for now.

So in order to flash it, do you follow the same steps as with flashing CWM, same commands and everything, or is it different?

You can use the same commands, but change the file names. Mine is a boot partition image, which goes on /dev/block/mmcblk0p9. The zip files are installable from cwm and should get written to the right partition without you having to type the name in.

Is there a stock or giantpunes sprint kernel cuz after flashing this or a vm kernel my phone can't connect to wifi and I can't find a sprint kernel anywhere on the web at all

Restore your nandroid.
There should be an advanced option in there that lets you restore only the boot partition from the nandroid backup. And if you could send me the stock boot.img from inside your nandroid backup (the one you hopefully made as soon as you installed the cwm), I'll take a look and see if I see what is causing the issue.
