gingerbread 2.3.6 root questions

hi fairly new to the whole rooting scene. I had a successful root and flash by putting honeycomb on my nook color, and bricked a LG Thrill very bad. Had to return it. I know have a galaxy s2 from att. It has gingerbread 2.3.6 on it and I want to root it. I have searched up and down to find a good how to and if it is possible to root 2.3.6 without losing any features. I heard alot of people that rooted on 2.3.6 lost wifi. I dont want to downgrade then root if at all possible. So if someone can point me in the right direction of a safe way to root 2.3.6 that would be great. If this was posted somewhere else and I missed it please dont get all up tight about it sorry for the mistake.

OK I got my phone rooted via odin and everything was great except the wifi was not working. So I flashed a different kernel and I am still on 2.3.6 with root, cwm, and working wifi

Please point me to what kernel you found to get around the dead wifi. I made the dumb mistake of the 9100 flashing path and of course our phones are not that model, you get to have wifi but the keys on the bottom are mapped wrong and whatnot. I also tried an ice cream sandwich flash which ended up worse. Perhaps with a lot of digging you can make it work but i need to use this phone everyday, I dont have a backup. Today I'd rather have a steamlined gingerbread along with getting rid of crippled/useless att apps to free up space etc.
