I have all kinds of phone storage but I don't think that's the issue here. I think it's a cache problem. My /cache currently says 59 MB used, 125 MB left.

My theory is that not only does the update file reside there, but I'm guessing that since it's an update, certain OS files are being temporarily cached in case there's a problem with the update. So you may actually need much more space than whatever the file size itself requires.

If anyone having space (to install) problems could download the app "OS Monitor", it may be helpful to get a finger on this. Open the app, and press the "Misc" tab. It'll list your current usage for /system, /data, /sdcard, and /cache.

I think you're right!

/system 97.2% Used
Total: 253,953K
Used: 246,908K
Available 7.044K

/data 20.1% Used
Total: 765.992K
Used: 153,700K
Available: 612,292K

/sdcard 14% Used
Total: 15,654,912K
Used: 2,190,656K
Available: 13,464,256K

/cache 13.4% Used

I just talked to HTC. Here's my story and what happened: I'm running 2.2 and got the notification for 2.3.4 yesterday. I sat on it to see how others fared. From what I can tell, that update would have taken me to 4.06. Today , some folks are getting the next step to 4.08. Fine, but I no longer have any update notification and a check says I'm up-to-date. When I called HTC and explained the situation the tech had me try *#*#checkin#*#* I tried it twice, but received no acknowledgment. At that point he said I had to try a phone reset. I was not happy with that and told him so. He did some more checking and then said a reset would not be necessary, and the update would come around again in the next three or four weeks. None of this made any logical sense. He also said that installation of the update would reset the phone anyway (although you are never warned about this). I finished the call and tried the checkin procedure later on......it worked, but still no udate notification. This whole situation is totally nuts. I dropped Apple because their system updates were so buggy and they would never acknowlege problems or really fix them. It looks like I'm back in the same mess. Anyone have a clue about what's really going on?

The update servers are probably busy. Try back tonight when they are probably less busy. You should definitely get it again in a day or two.

Can we form a consensus that those who couldn't install the smaller update due to lack of space are powerless to get it again, and must wait for it to be re-pushed?

Posted this on xda, but wanted to let anyone here know that maybe didn't,

Just wanted to pass some info that was posted on Droid-Life.

Setting ur time to 12:30AM today, I guess should automatically call for the update. Tried it and it started dl'ing on my sisters inc. She was on 4.06, unrooted, etcc.... Now am on 4.08 after the install. I had the space issue earlier when she originally got the update so it failed. I got a cache cleaner, and also did a cache wipe in the stock recovery then did the new updatr. 4.08 went fine, so yea, jus fyi!

Here's the orig. post,

Person on Verizon forums siad to: Manually change the time on your phone to 12:30am today. This will trigger an automatic check in with the update servers and you will get the appropriate update.
For people who the update failed the first time...try that.

Now some people reported after dl'ing, the phone wouldn't actually reboot when it did the countdown crap. No probs for me, but yea, setting the time to 12:30 got the update to start dl'ing agian

I FOUND IT OUT ... ALL CAPS!!AHHHHH!!! first when u get the red triangle in the recovery screen scroll down to the one that says "Wipe Cache Partition" and confirm, ive tried it with three Dinc's and it works excelently!! but idk if im just lucky :) good luck ...

P.S.The dingos told me this, and i tried it

Will wiping the cache remove all my app data? If so, why is this preferable over a factory reset?

No, it won't. Not entirely sure which cache that is exactly, but all you would notice it might take a little longer for some things to load the next time you run them.

The 12:30 a.m. thing worked in bringing up the install screen again, but mine just counted down and disappeared. Oh well. At least the update from yesterday worked, and the phone is flying along. Even the browser seems faster.

This did not work for me. Neither did changing the calendar. I wonder if the OTA update cares about which cell tower you are pinging. I am in Seattle for what it's worth.

Like others I ignored the first OTA push the other day because I needed my phone immediately. When I tried to get it later, no luck. I still have not been able to get the notification back.

I just tried this. After about a minute and a half I was prompted with the update screen. I clicked on install. After that the phone went back to home screen and nothing happened after that.

Sorry messed the quote up.

Yea that's odd lol, but a few people in the comments after the info I originally quoted from we're having same thing.

No clue why mine worked. I was thinking it was gonna do what the other few were saying

Just changed the date to 12:30 am. A few minutes later got a notification that a system update was available. Hit accept (or whatever it said), it started counting down, then nothing.

Then... I restarted it, went to system update and it was updating to 4.08.605.2. Great, right? Except it is once again stuck at the Rebooting Now... screen. Ugh.

I'm still unable to fix the "low on space" problem, even with tons and tons of space in the card, internal storage, phone storage and RAM.

THIS:

196MB used/552MB free on internal storage
2.2GB used/5.5GB free on SD card
546MB/748MB available on phone memory
121MB used/228MB free on RAM

...means "low on space"??????

I even went as far as deleting the data from virtually everything and several apps that I don't use, and the error keeps reappearing.

Upping the frustration level is this: I just got the notification saying an official system update was available for download. "Good," I thought to myself, "perhaps Verizon or HTC fixed the low on space bug". So I proceed to update.

Instead, after the prompted reboot, the phone says there's not enough space... to perform the system update! And now the system update is gone, it won't update, and won't let me try a second time.

I have the EXACT same problem. Haha. I got the LOS message the other day-- the same day I got the first GB update notification. So, on my way to work I updated it to GB and all was fine, but the LOS message remained.

I figured 'well, maybe they'll release another quick update soon to fix this.. I can't believe they didn't fix this problem in the first place, as I know it was common..'

I get another update notification this morning, I hit 'update later' a few times because I had to attend a funeral. After I left, I tried to update it and I got the 'not enough space to download update' message. I cleared some space, thought I hit the 'update now' button and it never did anything. Now When I check, it says my system is up to date. Hmph.

I realize this post isn't at all helpful, but I wanted to share my sympathies with you. Hopefully this gets resolved soon. Seems like such a simple thing to fix, given the access...

I got the original GB push before it was pulled. That went fine for me & has been ok since. No lost apps or problems that others have had.

Got the new notification last night but battery was too low. I've been putting off doing the update until I could see what the concensus here is. Seems like this 4.08 fix is small doesn't yield any big changes. Should I just ignore it?

Or if I try it & get the low space thing then it just doesn't load & I keep what I have right?

Thanks for the help - So glad this forum is here (cuz Verizon has no clue)

I got totally confused and frustrated with all of the well-intentioned help on here, so I just decided to do a factory reset instead which fixed almost everything. I even got the second patch (4.08.605.2) install notification during my set-up and all went smooth.:)

Except, always a but, my app drawer still stays open after launching & closing an app. This doesn't occur on a friend's phone. Any suggestions out here as to why this is happening and if I can set it back to how it use to be under Froyo where the app drawer self closed after launching an app? thanks

I think a factory reset is the only way to go. As soon as I'm to a computer to store everything, it's starting over time.

I'm thinking the same. It feels silly to do a hardware reset when the issue appears to be minor, but my fear is that if I wait for another Verizon fix that it could turn into another situation where I wait for weeks or months of testing (and given that the Incredible is almost 2 years old there is a risk that support will stop at some point).

Is this an overreaction?

Question: How do you turn off the notifications to update the phone?

I've got a friend who got the update and (I don't know the details) but she had to do a factory reset. She does not want to install GB, but the notice is coming up every 15 minutes. How do you stop it?

It'll stop after awhile. I kept on ignoring the install. It finally went away and now I have to wait for when HTC gives me the update.

This 12:30am thing isn't doing anything for me.:(

There's no point. My experience as well as a lot of others, has been an unsuccessful attempt at tricking the update to hitting the phone again. Mights as well just wait or do a reset & get the update when it prompts you at the set up.
