Gingerbread (Android 2.3) on the Shift?

At this point, only faint rumors exist for that - I should know, I started one.

I sure hope soonest possible - there's one performance upgrade in Gingerbread (garbage collection) that they tout for games but is really useful for all of us.

I'd also be hoping that we get the new Sense as part of that Gingerbread upgrade. ;)

For those new to Android - the 2.2 (Froyo) you have on your Shift is really great - most people are still waiting on that, but HTC keeps us ahead of the curve.

Here's your key to Android versions:
1.5 - Cupcake
1.6 - Donut
2.0/2.1 - Eclair
2.2 - Froyo
2.3 - Gingerbread

And next comes Honeycomb, then Ice cream - as in C, D, E, F, G, H, I ... Referring to them by numbers or names is equally cool.

Here's a quick look at what Gingerbread will update -

I read that it was going to be Ice Cream Sandwich, not just Ice Cream, lol. Actually I think I read that was on wikipedia.

I hope they release 2.3 on the shift soon. I love this phone, its obviously better than my old phone (HTC Hero) which I liked for the responsiveness of the touch screen but could not get past the lag and not being able to save apps to SD card unless I rooted it. I don't understand why everyone loves virtual-keyboard-only phones so damn much. I couldn't spell a damn thing right and had to retype everything 2 or 3 times on the Hero. A physical keyboard is much easier for sending a large email or text on IMO.

I hope they release the sense version of gingerbread as well. Meanwhile i'm rockin evervolv (custom gingerbread rom) as my daily on the shift and its pretty smooth. I'm liking gingerbread alot more than froyo.

I'm finding myself awaiting on the 2.3/4 Gingerbread update myself would be awesome they update our version of HTC Sense thou  I find it annoying I see (Force Wait) option coming up at times

I had got the evo shift initially because of the physical keyboard and the way they advertised the phone it seemed like it was the newer, better evo. Now as it would seem its more like the stepchild evo. Everything for it seems to be much later, if ever at all. Its not that different from the evo that we don't get the gingerbread grade at the same time. Its not just this making me think so, but I'm thinking I need to trade my shift for the evo

We expected a Q2 Gingerbread for the Evo because it was announced some time ago. The speed-up for it before the Evo 3D launch is possibly to clear inventory or to look competitive to the DX or to build goodwill for the 3D.

Several apps coded in nontransportable ways, such as Netflix, were instantly broken.

Not sure what all the stuff is you've been waiting on, and I personally think you're jumping the gun a little, but if you want an Evo, they're available.

No need too unless your that impatient. I'm sure the release will be before the Evo 3D's release on the 24th or shortly after.

Theres more to it then just the update, It feels like HTC/Sprint thought that the shifts popularity would have been much more then it turned out to be. I mean who wouldnt, s**t its the evo which is a great phone with an additionally great keyboard!
But since they are seeing how many more people are about the EVO, then the shift that the shift has kinda taken the back seat..

And Ive attempted to root my phone to get a temp GB until the real deal, but my phone wont sync with the sync program on the computer. Is there a way to do this without connecting to the computer? or through a tether possibly?

The Shift is almost the same when speaking of all around performance and at times it is faster at some tasks then the Evo. Don't worry about what other people care for as long as your happy with your phone. As for your rooting problem, did you download HTC Sync off your phones SD card? Be aware that if you root your phone you will not be able to upgrade to Android 2.3 when the update is released.

I tried getting sync off of the phone and I also went ahead and manually downloaded it. I cannot get the program to recognize the device. is there anything that needs to be done first or downloaded on the phone to make it be recognizable by the pc? I've tried several different data cables as well. That's why I was hoping I could somehow root via some wireless connection or just doing it on the phone by its self. I won't continue going on about the rooting after I see what kind of replies I get. I know this isn't the proper thread/section but I'm posting from my phone so it'll be a hassle to move the thread

You basically just need HTC sync to install the proper drivers for your phone. I actually didn't even have HTC sync installed the first time I rooted.

Sorry for continuing the high-jack

to throw in a new thread hijack, i am very disappointed with the cyanogen 7 rom. its sleek and cool, but it crashed when i tried to make a backup, forcing me to spend an hour wiping cache, restoring backup and finally doing another factory reset and installing the rom all over. gonna try mikshift now ;)
