Root Gingerbread Captivate Roms?

So I want to ask,
Are there any ROM's for Captivate?

But above that. I wanted to say something.

Up until now, I have seen my phone as perfect. And I wouldn't want to try and improve upon perfection. So I would never consider rooting or anything like that. But that all changes now.

I am PISSED. No update about when we get 2.2, they are releasing new phones, new OS for the tablets (I have a Galaxy Tab)..But NO talk about us?

I just bought my GF a Nexus S, and I want Gingerbread. I want it NOW.

SO if you were afraid to lose what you had,

If you feared the brick,

If you wanted to remain neutral...

Nows the time to turn..

Turn to the Dark Side.

Because at least then we can electrocute people.

There are no Gingerbread ROMs yet for the Captivate. Give it time... Gingerbread just came out. The Nexus S is the only device with Android 2.3 at the moment. Your impatience is a bit premature. ;)

They're being worked on, but these things take time.

If i am not mistaken, darky v 8 is gingerbread. Someone said above that it has bootloops. I was wondering if it was safe to install. Because I plan on flashing it on my phone soon.

It is not. It has a Gingerbread theme... like a few other ROMs are doing to try and look hip/modern... but it's still 2.2(.1).

As has been already stated: there are no stable, feature-complete Gingerbread ROMs out. The only things our are "demos" where a ton of things don't work and the risk is about 100X higher of bricking your phone by flashing them.

We all feel your pain / anxiety, but hold your horses, man. It isn't too early to begin demanding a 2.2 update, but demanding 2.3 is a bit unfair.
By the way, the Nexus S may have Gingerbread while we're stuck on Eclair but that's one of the very few pluses it has over the Captivate in my opinion.. And I wouldn't switch either, even if I could.

Call me crazy but, is it really out of the question to hope samsung will just skip 2.2

and jump to 2.3?

I mean... if they already have it on the nexus s.. is it really out of the question to think it would be a waste of time upgrading to 2.2 then 2.3 a month later?

You're not crazy to hope, and you're not alone... even some at AT&T were suspecting. However, given the recent release of 2.2 on the Rogers (Canada) Captivate, I think it's safe to say we're just going to see 2.2 and maybe not even 2.2.1. 2.3, if we ever get it at all, will come later.

WHAT?! This is in every way possible incorrect.

There's a handful of things left to be hammered out (Camera, GPS, and a few others).

100x higher? Are you that daft? The entire installation consists of two things:

1. Extracting a .tar to a folder.
2. Flashing a kernel.

The change of bricking your phone is drastically less. Your entire ROM is completely untouched.

Well then it's not "feature complete". :) Like I said. And according to the thread on XDA:

- Wifi semi-working (tend to crash the phone on Wifi sleep timeout)
- Calls working but no DATA for me (coolya had data, which means: erratic) - voice not tested.
- kind of laggy, but there is a lot of headroom.
- GPS working only by Wifi/Triangulation networking - No satellites.
No GPS at all and erratic data connection doesn't sound like a fully-stable ROM to me. I'm not trying to discredit the amazing progress that Supercurio has made... I applaud him and look forward to the day that we can run 2.3 on our Captivates due to his efforts. :) However, I stand by my statement. The current state of is is not suitable for a "daily driver".

I think DarkDvr quit updating that thread. DG's got a thread w/a flashable zip that he seems to be updating (up to build 4 as of this post).

But yeah, def not a daily driver yet...

Thanks for the link. There have been lots of threads and it's sometimes tricky to figure out which is the "main" one. :)

Straight from DG's mouth:

Known Issues:
Camera does not work
GPS does not work (network can still find you, good for general location)
Wifi (if left on while phone enters sleep will cause a kernel panic)
General Stability (random things at random times can cause FC's, soft reboots, etc...)
Not something that can be recommended for normal use. If you want to tinker/experiment and get a preview, fine... just expect you'll be flashing back to something stable (2.2 or 2.1) soon after. :)

This is the first ROM I've flashed and it is doing great! Speed is awesome! I flashed it last week and it works great! Great transitional animations! Make sure you flash the one for the Captivate and not the i9000. I installed Darky's v8.0.1 instead of Darky v8.0.1 ([ROM]Darky 8.0.1 - xda-developers) and had speaker issues, no sound came out of my speakers at all! That was the only problem which SUCKED. But I highly recommend Darky v8.0.1 I am very pleased with it!:D

DG had absolutely nothing to do with the Gingerbread port. He just repackaged it in a marginally easier installation method. There's a reason the bug list is identical.

Also, the threads on XDA are very outdated compared to what they've actually gotten working. They just haven't released it to the public yet.

That's fine. Neither I nor anyone else I saw was blaming him for the bugs. We did give him credit for whatever work he put into it (even if it's just repackaging the port).

I was name-dropping him not to give him full credit for all the work, but because comments about the state of the port coming from him would hold some legitimacy. :)

Well, then... we can't be blamed for not knowing insider information that's not being released to the public, then, can we? ;) No reason to get all "WHAT?!" and flip out on me.

Just like the CyanogenMod port for the i9000, a bunch of whiny dumbasses pissed the devs off and so they left.
