Gingerbread coming?

Jay could be right... but then we'll have the Gingerbread ROMs from the international Galaxy S. I don't plan on waiting around for at&t and Samsung on the next Android version.

Hopefully Samsung learned from their mistakes and took a whole lot into consideration when they built the Froyo load. In other words they should keep the phone-specific code (and AT&T bloatware) separate from the base operating system in order to make it easier plug in a new OS version, tweak, recompile, debug and release in a reasonable amount of time.

There *should* be no reason to ever take more than a month to incorporate a new Android version and have it on the street - OTA.

Interesting. I'd like to say I believe Samsung and AT&T learned from all the negative feedback from the Froyo debacle, but I really don't think they would push out 2.3 this early in North America.

I believe also that North American Captivate owners will NOT receive Gingerbread 2.3. To me Samsung showed their true colors with their *no response* stance on this. I understand problems occur, but come on now people, some sort of a response would have been nice. When my contract is up so is Samnsung in my books.

im pretty sure they always had a response, and it was "2.2 will be released for the captivate in the US but we dont know when," or something of that nature

I don't think 2.3 will EVER be release for the US-based Captivate. It doesn't make ANY sense - In 2-4 months, ATT will stop selling the Cappy and move on to something else - Something that is running 2.2 and will be upgraded to 2.3... The only motivation for a company to to updates is MONEY. Why update a product (Cappy) that ATT will have shelved already?

They won't.

The hope is that another Galaxy-S device WILL get 2.3 and the custom ROM developers will be able to port it over to the Captivate - THAT - I see happening in the next few months...

I don't know what they have planned too far into the future, but I'm thinking the Samsung Infuse is the next step for the Galaxy S. I don't think there is any confirmation on the OS yet, but its either 2.2 or 2.3 from what I read.

I don't think its unreasonable to say that the Captivate will eventually get 2.3. I don't think the Infuse is drastically different. Just bigger, with an upgraded camera, and a cam on the front. So their OS's would probably work on either phone. So if it does ship with 2.3 then its possible the Cap will get it too.

We can only hope.

It might be, but I'm sticking with my amazing Froyo upgrade for now. All I've ever wanted on a Captivate.

Froyo hasn't been out a week and people want something newer. Almost anything in here is pure speculation. Samsung doesn't need to report to people about something that isn't released yet. Neither does anyone else. I'm content with what I have. If I weren't, I'd be getting another phone.

Not really news considering Samsung India said in (December?) that Gingerbread was coming to Indian users.

Well I will admit I am looking for 2.3 roms like a crack head because, I've had 2.2 since like 2 weeks after I got my phone.

Supposedly 2.3 gets better bat life which would be pretty epic.

Although if it wasn't for independent devs I would be really happy with 2.2..

Anyway.. I am not holding my breath..

But, if samsung were serious about repairing their image.. a 2.3 update that came out in a month would be pretty awesome..

we have the most amazing devs who more than delivered awesome 2.2 roms so taking that into account there will be stable 2.3 roms after it is released in eu

for me personally I will never run a stock rom again EVER!!!!!!!!

I think updates will come quicker now that at&t allowed this phone to tether. I think that was the biggest problem at&t had with the switch. Now that they have the network setup to support it theres nothing else that would have to be changed to update it.

Yeah gingerbread is only an incremental upgrade from Froyo, much less so than going from Eclair to Froyo.

The upcoming one to watch is Ice Cream, which will be a merge of features and designs from the Honeycomb tablet branch back to the smartphones.

The one to watch for is Tiramisu. With this update your phone will be able to intuitively read your thoughts, and interact with your environment.

No need for Bluetooth dialing when you can just think the name of the one you want to speak with. In fact, Tiramisu is so advanced, you wont even need to actually speak to anyone. Your thoughts will be beamed to them via AT&T's 9G neural Network.

Alas, you will need to learn Italian to get the full benefit.
