*edited* I can't find any verification of the information I posted, my apologizes for possibly inaccurate our outdated information.

Also, for whatever it is worth.

It is assumed your locked into a contract for 2 years and won't change phone.

Yeah samsung dropped the ball on the captivate..

that doesn't mean it is too late for to change.

If Samsung gets serious and updates to 2.3 soon..

And updates the captivate at least once or twice after at&t drops it, they can still earn some major credit.

And there is no guarantee either way.. but, there was a leak like yesterday so we may even see gingerbread roms end week...

It does stand to reason that hummingbird based phone's would recieve more benefits from Gingerbread.

Can you post source for this claim of Froyo only an incremental upgrade from Eclair for Hummingbird? Samsung claimed in their official release note for Froyo that the Galaxy S benefits from 2-5x performance increase from the Dalvik JIT. This Samsung's claim is similar to claim of Froyo performance from HTC.

Looking for the article where I read that the first time I can't seem to find it.

Therefore my information may be inaccurate/outdated and I will edit my post to acknowledge that fact.

That's cool SF. I did read about Dalvik being only optimized for Snapdragon on this very forum a long while back and that's was why I was interested in the source for it. So I was pleasantly surprised to read about Samsung's Froyo's claims for the Captivate specifically (pretty much in-line with claims from HTC. Let's hope Samsung didn't just copy-and-paste from HTC's site ;)):

  • Improved Performance
    • Performance of the browser has been enhanced using the V8 engine, which enables faster loading of java-script-heavy pages.
    • Dalvik Performance Boost: 2x-5x performance speedup for CPU-heavy code over Android 2.1 with Dalvik JIT.
    • The graph to the right shows the performance speedup from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2 using various benchmark tests. For example, LinPack is now more than 5 times faster.
    • Kernel Memory Management Boost: Improved memory reclaim by up to 20x, which results in faster app switching and smoother performance on memory-constrained devices.

For whatever it is worth I was running froyo cognition v3.03 before my phone got fried and I am now running cognition v4.1.1 and while there was a few days inbetween.

But, It *seems* like the rom based off the offical version is even faster than the rom based off the other version.

Either way I am hoping the gingerbread version comes out relatively soon. I have heard it is optimized for battery life which would be really cool.

that's what i heard too.

gingerbread seems smoother to me as well... i think there may be custom ROMs created for gingerbread or something...
 
Some developers are already working on 2.3 Gingerbread for Captivate. Its buggy but they will get it to work and it will be out long before the official version (and probably better too!) . I don't think I'll ever put a stock ROM on my phone again.

I'm waiting for the Peanut Brittle Update - Android 5.6 with force field and phaser gun (only if you're rooted).
