Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

I have not updated to Gingerbread yet. Sticking with 2.2 until I know what happens. For the record, just checked updates, and it says my phone has no updates available now. I guess they pulled 2.3 completely?

No update yet in NYC @ 11:30AM.

I saw the Evo Shift 2.3 update on YouTube too and what a gyp. My girlfriend has a Shift, we didn't even know it had an update yet. I am going to download it soon and see what it's all about. Not exactly a Sense 3.0, but much better than the cheap update we got -- at least visually. I have to say I am happy with the speed update, the restart update, and the improved battery life.

no, they didn't pull it. i tried to update last night (when i had time to do a factory reset) and it kept telling me there was no update. when i woke up this morning i checked it and there it was. so it was available yet today.

although i must say i am NOT happy with this whole update thing. i synced my contacts but after i did the reset, they completely disappeared. luckily i had all my text messages backed up and the majority of my contacts were available through that.

and they had better push out this fix soon. i've had the update for just a few hours but already i'm getting sick of the voicemail notification issue. i've tried several things - another reset, clear data, clear notification in call settings - but it keeps coming back. grr.

Curious.... You synced your Contacts with Gmail and they were deleted?

The Shift update goes OTA today and has been available for manual download for a few days - same thing as the Evo.

The Shift has twice the internal storage as the Evo, so expect it to accommodate more.

We have a forum for it and an announcement thread - http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-shift-4g/356394-official-gingerbread-2-3-shift-here-w00t.html

Netflix doesn't work, apps that need the compass doesn't work, voice to text doesn't work.

I regret updating to gingerbread before reading this thread! If any is reading this PLEASE stick with the froyo because this gingerbread is stale!

yep. synced contacts, went into gmail, contacts were there (i dont use my gmail account for anything other than my evo), did factory reset, synced my contacts back and nothing. went back into gmail and they were gone. i dont know if it was an evo issue, gmail issue, or what... i'm just glad i had the sms backup with most of my contacts but i'm still missing a few...

I bet they got deleted from your phone somehow and then when you synced the blank contact list on your phone took over and deleted the Gmail contacts. I had a similar thing happen with Outlook back in my Windows Mobile days. Always good to back up your Gmail contacts online as well. This may help you get them back:

You're not the only one. I've had my gmail account for a long time already and never knew about this!

Thanks for posting that info sikclown. Now I can be completely comfortable if I ever mistakingly mess up my contacts or delete them.

I had many issues with the update. But after doing a factory reset of everything (I used my backup pro to just install one app that is no longer available in the market, MoBo Music) and made sure to sync my contacts...after the reset I have noticed a huge improvement in battery life, as some have mentioned and my voicemail notification went away as well...I highly recommend a factory reset to anyone having issues.

I actually had a lot of fun redoing my phone, I switched to Launcher Pro to Go and Handcent have been playing with all the customizing options.

i did just like you said.. my back up pro ****ed me so bad. i lost everything. it said i had backed up everything to my sd card but when i tried to restore it didn't have ANY thing backed up. god damn it!!!

I was out of the country when Gingerbread hit and I was going to download it (now may not but that is not the point) but I can't seem to find it. I have looked for updates for a few days now and it says I am up to date and I havent updated anything (minus the PRL) in months. Am I missing something?

Will Backup Pro save my Angry Birds progress?

Nah, I had to reset all the setting for my apps, like handcent and my launcher apps...but I'm actually glad cause i made everything different and fresh...it's literally like having a brand new phone! Having said that, I SPOKE TOO SOON! While at work today I started getting the damn voicemail notification again...I keep checking for an update but none yet in Philly

Once you sync to google u will get ur contacts and calender back...def dont use backup pro for that or it will double all ur contacts. I made that mistake and literally had no internal memory left. So really all I needed it for was Mobo music, since it's not available anymore.

Sorry to hear that though, did you try connecting your phone to the computer and check for a new folder on your SD card entitled, "rerware" inside you will find your backups...I hope it worked man

I have the same problem with no alphabetical order in contact groups. A Sprint rep today told me not to update to Gingerbread. Obviously, that advice came too late. Anybody else with this problem? Any word on whether a fix is on the way?
I installed the update this morning (June 21, 2011)....the contacts in the people groups I created are still not in alphabetical order!
