Gingerbread incoming?

Its likely that the update to 2.3 may flash the encrypted bootloader, like the 2.2 CDMA did for US Cellular and wildfire.

I wonder why it's not been released then? I've yet to dabble with rooting and flashing so I'll wait for the OTA version but I won't hold my breath.

to be honest, I know there aint much to it, but anything that helps the battery life cant be a bad thing.

Well Froyo on O2 took ages. One of the last UK carriers to provide it. Expect a fair delay between HTC's unbranded release and O2's branded release.

Would you recommend rooting or flashing the phone? I really want to fix this problem. I don't know anything about rooting or flashing but will try and learn it all if it is worth it. But worried as it might effect warranty with O2 (although I don't know what warranty I have to be fair! lol).

I have put a different software on my Sansa MP3 player and was well worth it, so this is why I am tempted, but put off by warranty and satiability.

What are the advanages for rooting?

P.S Sorry for going off topic!

Her is a short list I've made to show you the advantages of rooting:

By rooting your phone, you get a full access to it. What does this mean?
* Fix the low internal storage problem - This has affected many phones, including my HTC Desire. Before rooting, I had only the Google app2sd which still didn't satisfy my needs. After rooting, I was able to combine some clever techniques so that I never have to worry about the shortage of internal memory. :)
* Remove carrier/manufacturer bloatware - as mentioned above.
* To get the latest OS updates - there is no official Gingerbread update for my phone, but I'm enjoying Android v2.3 already for couple of months thanks to custom ROMs.
* Ability to make a true backup of your phone as a complete image (nandorid backup).
* Ability to use some great applications that are only available for rooted phones. A good example is Titanium Backup.
* The fun to try new ROMs that can completely change the look and feel of your phone. For example, ASOP ROMs make my Desire look like a Google Nexus phone, while MIUI ROMs make it look like an iphone. :D
* Added features and functionality - some ROMs can enable HDMI output, enable ad-hoc WiFi connectivity, enable 720p video recording, enable WiFi tethering, be very battery efficient with adjusted kernels, ability to overclock/underclock your phone, etc.

In fact, I think I'll buy my future phones only if they are rootable!

I will also only buy future phones if they are rootable. It makes the phone fun and feel new for way longer as with every new ROM it feels like a new phone :D

Last day of may. Had my desire 9 months now. No gb still. The inevitable will happen soon I think. Time to void the warrenty

Wouldn't blame you either! I am starting my 4th month of ownership, but already thinking of ditching the warrenty. Just need to brush up on what I need to do and what it all means before I take the plunge.

At least I am safe in the knowledge that if all goes pear shaped, I have some helpful people on here to help me out of a hole :)

I've rooted my phone 3 months after the purchase date when I've read on XDA forums about the Leedroid ROMs. That was the best move for me after buying the Desire. A whole new experience, stability and speed. Plus using nandroid backups u can install any ROM in a matter of minutes and if u don't like it u can switch back to your old one almost instantly. I've had GB on mine the day the first LeeDroid GB ROM appreared.

I'm a bit confused, could someone clarify for me what Gingerbread does?

Is is like a ROM (or OS)? Or is it more like a Kernal?

I am thinking of rooting, and want Gingerbread and a ROM, but getting confused if Gingerbread is just a ROM or runs deeper than that?

I have a Desire on Froyo on O2 at the moment

Really? I'm so tempted.

Yeah I was interested in this so I Google-d it. The spec seems pretty good. It is difficult as there are so many ROMS around that I don't know which one would be best for me. But at the moment I am trying to get my head around all this rooting malarkey and all the technical words.

The more research I do the more confident I am and the more likely that I will take the plunge.

From what I have read, you can put original ROM back on if you ever needed to send phone back and chances of the phone company noticing are smaller than larger.

The only other thing that put me off the LeeDroid GB ROM is that I think you have to update the radio and I am sure I read somewhere that someone had said that updating the radio is the main reason of bricking a phone and best avoided.

Could anyone please tell me what the difference between making a ROM (no Root needed) via this http://android.modaco.com/content/h...r-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen-2-3-3-gri54/

and rooting and using ROM's?

Would rooting be better, is so, why?

Thanks in advanced.

There is a risk of bricking if you flash a radio. If you check the file is ok and you dont interupt the process then there should be no problem.

That said, you probably wont have to update the radio. if your radio works - no need.

Please could you have a read of the rooting FAQ, which you will find if you follow the red link in my signature? You may find this vgery helpful.

Could anyone please tell me what the difference between making a ROM (no Root needed) via this 03/Mar Gr26 - NO SENSE: MoDaCo Custom ROM for HTC Desire with Online Kitchen (2.3.3 / GRI54) - Android @ MoDaCo

and rooting and using ROM's?

Would rooting be better, is so, why?

That kitchen is for a specific custom rom (MoDaCo), where you "bake" it to your specification (to an extent). You still need to be rooted to use it. Its just one of many custom roms available.

ROM actually means Read Only Memory. The Android OS sits in the ROM, therefor we refer to Android OS as a ROM. Custom ROMS are just custom versions of Android. Every ROM comes with a kernel (including officially) as this is required for the ROM to function. Its the most important part.

Hope this helps.

I have been reading your FAQ, well, some of it! Every time I think I am understanding it the link leads to more links and I am getting snowed under again! lol

Yes thanks, that helps. I am starting to understand it better now. Even though there is a word definition thread, it is still in quite techy speak.

I was thinking of doing loads of research and then maybe start a thread as I have found each phone seems to be unique in a sense (no pun intended!).

But I want to try and see if I can work it out myself first so I understand it better and to save you repeating yourself (in theroy! lol).

Can anyone confirm that the GB release has bluetooth software that you can connect to your PC as unable to do this at the moment.

The reason for wanting bluetooth is that I have a PC program called "My Phone Explorer" in which you can organise your address book and stuff but best of all, use it to send text messages which for me is the bees knees. I recommend it, its free. I can only use it at the moment via USB which doesn't really do my battery any good as it's constantly changing it!

The problem I will have if I run into problems is that I only have Internet at work and not at home which is why I got a smart phone so if I am using my PC at home and get into problems, I will be without a phone for a bit! :-S

Hence why I want to make sure that I more prepared than not! lol

Should I start a new thread as this going off topic?

I would recommend a new thread in the Rooting forum for root specific advice as most won't see this :)
