Argh! I've never been so put off by a smartphone update. Gingerbread was obviously not very well tested.
I've got a new droid x to replace my previous x which had the bluetooth break after nearly a year.
It came preloaded with Gingerbread.
I'm having a number of difficulties that are driving me nuts.
1) Lose 3g and outgoing call ability every so often. About once a day. Only way to fix it is to power off then on or pull the battery. I can still receive calls but can't make any or get data network. Scott at Verizon Wireless support said this is a known issue with Gingerbread and they are working on a fix and that swapping out the phone again would not likely fix it.
2) When home page (the center page) is filled up with icons, pressing and holding down on an app icon in the all apps group gives me an error and says the home page is full. If I have at least one blank spot on the center page, I don't get the error and can move the icon to any of the 5 pages after I press and hold and select "add to home".
3) The blue status bar makes it nearly impossible to see status icons when it is bright outside. When driving during the daylight with the phone in the OEM droid x dock, the icons are very hard to see.
4) At night, the led backlit buttons, when the phone is in the stock dock, stay lit super bright all the time. They're burning a hole in my head and causing a distraction while driving. There appears to be no way to control the brightness.
5) Most of the time, the automatic brightness doesn't work. I frequently have to go in at night and turn the brightness of the display down. This does *not* dim the led backlit buttons
6) When I'm connected to wifi, it also disconnects when the display times out. When I press the home button to bring it back up, it reconnects to wifi in about 10 seconds. Is this some sort of power saving featuture?
7) The status icon on media apps and other running apps fail to appear in the status bar half the time. This is super annoying because when I want to pause pandora, slacker, stock music app, google listen, etc, I have to find the app icon and select it to get back into the app rather than just pull it down through the status bar.
The Verizon rep said the reason my Wife's phone never updated to gingerbread and doesn't have the option currently is because Motorola stopped the udpates due to the problems. He said they are working on an update. In the meantime, the wonderful experience I've had with my X over the last year is turning sour real fast.
