Gingerbread OTA

For me, the two biggest bugs / drawbacks are:

1. GPS will lock up often. After 5 minutes or so using it with Google Navigation, Navigation says it looses the sats and I have to reboot to fix.

2. There is no way to turn off the camera shutter sound.

If you want to manually update to GB, follow these steps. You must be stock Froyo and not rooted.

Well that's disappointing. I've had three Epics and after the Froyo update, the GPS never worked well for me. I could never lock on closer than 'within 30 yards' which is way too inaccurate to use for turn-by-turn. I was really hoping the update would fix all the GPS issues.

Gps is a freakin joke now. Unusable

I just got the OTA yesterday at work. My GPS seems to be working fine. When I first checked my camera shutter sound, it was silent said "Off" under the settings menu in the camera app. Stupid me decided to click one of the shutter sounds, and now there's no way to turn it off. I'm guessing that if you had the shutter sound off on Froyo, it would remain off when updating to Gingerbread. Other than these two things, I don't find a whole lot different.

Can you at least mute the shutter sound by turning either the media or system volume off?

Nope, even with all the sound turned off the shutter sound is still played. And it is LOUD. Thankfully someone on the xda forums provided a fix you can flash to remove the sound. I think you have to be rooted to apply it.

Is there a list somewhere of everything this was supposed to "fix"?

Are we still supposed to flip Flight Mode on/off and stop DRM from running when we startup or have severe battery drain?

My keyboard is still skipping.

I always hated that Sprint would refuse to go/stay on roam and would kick me off if it even caught a whiff of a tower; I miss the days of Roam Only network option, but after Gingerbread I can't even get data when I am on roam... no browsing, e-mails or texts... just keeps saying the data connection is not available

and I found out about the camera sound the hard way

Just got my OTA update about an hour ago. I do have the camera shutter sound, and it is definitely loud. Haven't tried the GPS yet, but I will give it a go this weekend probably. No data or app loss that I can tell. I do have one new app that I don't remember having before called "Books", which I assume is for Google Books.

The phone seems zippier. That could be all in my head, of course, I have no way of measuring for sure. No boot loop for me thankfully.

Honestly, it doesn't feel much different than Froyo did. I haven't had the update long enough to figure out if the battery life is better or not, but I'll know more about that tomorrow when I start from fully charged.

I hope that someone will figure out why an updated phone would go through boot recycling. It really is a pain in the rear. All I can do is continue to let it reboot until at some point it stops which is at least 10 loops first. Is there anyway to revert back to Froyo? I don't have a PC to otherwise I would have rooted my phone. The phone is worthless if it continues to reboot. CAn't even make a phone call or receive one.

If you can find a computer to borrow, you can follow one of the many guides to flash back to FROYO, and reinstall the update. Otherwise, you might be stuck going to the Sprint Store, and dealing with them...

I finally got the update today. It seems a little faster, but other than that, not too much different from froyo.

I haven't tested out the gps on mine since this afternoon, so I don't know how bad it is yet.

I had the shutter turned off before I updated, and it appears to have stayed off. Not planning to test it by turning it on.

Are there any other issues cropping up with this update so far?

Sprint tech today (Jax, fl town center) told me he had 4 phones he reinstalled. He recommended hard reset before the update. He told me to wait for a bit before upgrading.

Just got mine yesterday. Battery now shows charged to 100%, and it seems to die at a slower rate.

With Froyo, when I charged, id get a red light, and after its been charged, it turns to blue so long as its plugged in.. But with Gingerbread, I get no blue light indicating fully charged. Im not even sure I get a red light for the entire duration of charging.

Anybody else notice this charge light change?

I have noticed that behavior a couple of times on mine, but for the most part, it shows red when charging and blue when finished charging.

When the light doesn't turn red when I plug it in, I will unplug it for a few seconds, plug it back in and all is good again.

Since the update and finally getting my phone to stop constantly going into reboot loops by reseting the phone to factory settings my phone has been working very well. There are two things that I have noticed since that would be things I hope will get fixed or patched.

1) There seems to be something causing memory links I believe its called. I notice throughout the day that memory seems to go into cache and doesn't release by itself so I have to use an app to clear the cache. The size of the cache could range anywhere from 2-10 mg's 2-3 times a day. I use the widget for the App 2 SD made by Sam Lu which shows internal memory left and how much cache can be cleared. I have not been able to pinpoint any specific thing that is causing it so if anyone has any ideas on what it might be I would appreciate the info.

2) I have had the phone lock up, freeze or just be shut down 3 times so far since the update. Twice when I was using the phone and doing things that required me to go from one app to another which I guess would be considered multitasking on the phone. The other time I went to turn my phone on and it was just shut off and I had to reboot it.

My phone is not and has never been rooted since I first purchased it on Aug 2011. Not that I have anything against rooting. I'd love to be able to root my phone but I only have a couple of working Mac computers. The only PC I have is an HP Pavillion a1710 which crashed a long time ago and am not able to use it because I do not have any Window's System software to reinstall so I can try to root my phone. Anyone knowing of any really cheap deals on getting Window's Vista or better, or even anyone who has updated to a newer version of Window's and willing to donate their older discs would be appreciated. I have been on disability for almost 2 years because of some severe back problems so I am not able to purchase system discs. I'd really appreciate any info or donations for Official system discs. I've already tried using the recovery discs from HP and they do not work and the drive has been wiped cleaned so I was told by HP that I need a full version of Windows.

Thanks in advance.

ive had the gingerbread update for about 2 weeks now & find that my battery life is slightly longer (+juice defender). i also was having serious gps fix issue when using gps essentials (never probl b/f ginger). i immediately uninstalled gps essen & installed gps test). gps test ive previously used on my archos5. i find that gps test's ability to delete & update AGPS data always aids in aquiring a fix on a satellite pretty quickly (under 60 secs).
