Gingerbread roll out starting

So when is gingerbread going to be available in the US? I want to give gingerbread a try before I finally make the switch to a ROM. I just can't stand the stupid lag, freezes, battery life, and everything else wrong with 2.2

I'm curious as to why people are complaining so much about their phones. This is android, the entire point of an open-source software is to try things different from the manufacturers! There are already 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 ROMs out there, in addition to a slew of incredible 2.2 ROMs with the best battery life out there. The fantastic thing about this release is it's going to have a captivate-specific 2.3 build for developers to work with, and that's nothing but good.
 
I've been tempted to go to a custom rom, but with a stock Gingerbread right around the corner I'm leaning towards waiting (which was my exact logic with Froyo).

I'm paranoid and cheap. I think I'd perfer to wait until my phone is out of warranty before I mess with it too much. I had a problem with my phone that I almost bit myself if the but just by rooting and not getting a waranty replacement, so I'm a bit gunshy about a full rom replacement.
 
I have to admit I'm a little gunshy about flashing a ROM as well. It's not that I don't think I can do it, it's that I'm still in warranty and if something went flooey, well, I'd be hooking up my old LG Shine again. Eep.
 
I feel the same as GreatBigDave. I think that if an official 2.3 update isnt available by the first or second week of July, I might just go ahead and flash my Cappy with a custom rom.

You might as well, they work a lot better too.
 
Honestly, I thought I was never going to put a ROM on my phone. That just seemed like a dumb idea to me. But after experiencing the many pains of what is Captivate's version of 2.2, I just gave up. I went with Serendipity 6.4 a couple weeks ago and I have to say, I feel really stupid for not going with a ROM earlier.
 
Been using the leaked Gingerbread ROM for about three days now. Best stock ROM to come out of Samsung for the Captivate. There are still a few minor issues, but better than the official Froyo ROM by a landslide.
 
Root it and ROM it. You'll be much happier. I've been rooted since December, never even wanted to try the "official" Froyo update. Been on Gingerbread for nearly a month, now on 2.3.4. Netflix is awesome on my Happy Cappy!
 
I'm rooted and I had a ROM before the official 2.2 but couldn't deal with the crappy battery performance...
 
I got the following text from AT&T today:

AT&T Free Msg:If you haven't already updated your Samsung Captivate to Android version 2.2, a free download is available. Using a PC browser, type in SAMSUNG's Digital World and follow the instructions on the site.

I upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 the first day it was out, so could this be a forerunner to a 2.3.x update?
 
I got that message a couple days ago myself. I found myself wondering the very same thing.

Would you have to upgrade to 2.2 before moving to 2.3? Just curious. I upgraded on day one myself.
 
I got that message nearly 6 weeks ago, even though I upgraded to 2.2 on the first day, also. I think that the message is just an AT&T screwup. (AT&T screwup???? Nah, can't be.)
 
I got that text also, although I updated the first day available. I also wonder if they were trying to get these on 2.2 to aid in getting 2.3 out. I won't hold my breath, but I do hope nonetheless!
