i think that is only achievable through a ROM, but im not 100% sure on that

I use 'Screen Off and Lock' from the market. It has animations when shutting the screen off. I use a long press of the search button on the bottom right to lock and shut off the screen (to help preserve the longevity of the top power key). Not sure if this is what you are referencing, but might be a decent substitute for you.

I've seen that on my friends phone...really cool...I think that's part of sense 3.0 or higher...unfortunately, we have to root to get all the recent versions of things that they should have given us on the gingerbread update...

the screen off animation is built into AOSP gingerbread. HTC went out of their way to disable this.
the screen of and lock app works, but its not as nice as the actual one.
the only way to do this is to Root the phone...then, and only then, can you flash a "patch" to get this.
i knew GB would be a disappointment to people. my wifes Dinc2 got GB already, and i just wasn't that impressed. it seemed marginally smoother and faster, but lacked screen off animation and the overscroll glow. 2 of the best parts of GB IMO (after the performance increase obviously)
