I want to update my Desire to Android 2.3 and was going to try the official HTC update before any custom ROMs.

What are my options if it doesn't work/I don't like it? Can I get back to 2.2?

You can get the RUU from shipped roms but you can't revert back to 2.2 without rooting, but there shouldn't be any need to revert. 2.3 isn't that much different than 2.2 and it means a total wipe of your data so it might be worth considering rooting first and then looking at custom roms as you can back up your apps+data when rooted .
 
If you'll be considering custom roms in the future, you may as well root and put a 2.3 rooted stock Rom on
 
Thanks for the replies. If I can't get it back to the factory set 2.2 then I may as well give a custom rom a go.

I'm a newcomer to rooting so will have to look into some tutorials first.
