I'm going with no, they're not gonna support it through its entire (2-year) lifetime, and if they give us Gingerbread, that's an extra 6 months or so of support, leaving only 6 months unsupported, and they wouldn't do that. I think Froyo is the last stop for unrooted users. Of course, that'll help my whole "there is no reason not to be rooted" argument.

I agree, however, I find that 2.2 is a bitter way to end support the original Droid. It had so many flaws and bugs (some that were never fixed for the unrooted user). For those that will never root, it leaves them with a phone that they have to put up with for a long time (if you have a 2 year contract) that has those flaws. Bummer.

Didn't Moto announce that 2.2 was the last official update for the DROID? Also, didn't all the devs at Motorola stop supporting and working on it? I specifically remember these announcements being made earlier this year.

they will not. IF it comes, it will be for rooted users thanks to some dev.

I know the devs will hook up the DROID! They will most certainly do their best to hook you guys up with a SPECTACULAR Gingerbread ROM! You guys still have a large developer community.

But I have to agree with the sentiment that Froyo was a terrible update. I hope Gingerbread is at least a little better.

I never followed that as I do not own a G1 so no care BUT was the G1 not suppose to have Froyo due to hardware limitations like they are saying about Gingerbread needing 512 memory and we only have 256. That alone might just stop the devs - though I have always been impressed by their abilities to overcome.
the 2 killers in Gingerbread for the D1 are the 512 memory and 1 ghz recommended requirements. well, by being rooted you can overcome the 1 ghz issue, but never can we overcome the 512 memory issue.
but this is where devs come into play and see if that 512 really even matters and if so, is there a way to fake the OS out with like compache or a swap file to the SD card.
ALSO, the #3 issue here is that pretty much, the D1 is dead and so most devs will move on and try to crack and support the newer phones and worry less about old D1's
I am a bit leery on this one, but time will tell.

Yeah, I think Google devs once acknowledged that Froyo was officially not supposed to be able to be run on the G1 because they believed the hardware on the G1 was too weak, but that Cyanogen would be able to hack it onto the device (he was able to).
But I also said for the longest time that it didn't matter that we have 256MB memory because as long as you have some memory open, an OS should be happy (this is also why I argue that it's stupid for computers nowadays to come with 8GB of memory or even 4GB. My custom-built gaming PC still runs smooth with 2GB of DDR2 and I doubt adding more memory will do anything for it). But Android seems to want a ton of memory open and will kill apps to keep itself happy. And thus, LP redraws.
And the D1 isn't dead at all! You can still buy refurbed D1s, and it's still the most widely-owned Android device out there. If anything, we always have CyanogenMod. The G1 still has it and it's over two years old!

dude.. you can still buy refurbed 1970's Pinto cars, that don't mean shizz. feel me? and IF it is the most widely owned as you say, it is only because it was the first and everyone jumped on it and since not even 2 years old & most of our NE2's are not up we are all stuck with it it's cool, it works for me, but come on - the newer sizes, newer screens, newer chips, better on board memory (we won't get into that as we see that issue 100% different), newer OS for newer phones, etc.. yeah the D1 may live right now per se, but it is dead and people are moving on and when everyones NE2 comes up, they will jump ship as all the newest stuff rolls out - like LITE

Haha, I don't want your old D1! I'm leaving too, as soon as a nice phone with a large screen and a physical keyboard makes an appearance. But it doesn't look like any manufacturer feels like doing that, now do they?

I think they will create Gingerbread roms for D1, because there are still rom devs making roms for the HTC Eris. If you are rooted, you can use Rom Manager and partition your SD card for apps2sd. I got mine set to 512 mb. as mentioned, the 1 GHz issue we can overcome by overclocking. It won't be hard to do if rooted. Do like I did here, partition your SD card to 512 mb, and you will be ready for a GB rom as apps get bigger, this will be required, plus not all apps opt for apps2sd, but with a rooted rom, you can. Don't cast out D1 yet. It may be a year old, but it still has lots of potential.

You can always try out Swapper. I never really understood it and felt my Droid ran just fine without it, but it does "help" overcome that memory min.

Only way to officially know is to wait & see. My wife is running stock and doesn't want rooted, so I will know if she receives the update. I really don't see it happening though...but the Droid is the #1 owned android device in America, so I wonder how many will turn to root?

That's not even a question, we're definitely getting CyanogenMod's Gingerbread updates. Hell, probably Honeycomb and even Ice Cream updates! But it's a question of whether or not Motorola's giving us Gingerbread. I say no.

We are talking about an official update. Not a ROM. pfff We all know there will be a 2.3 ROM availible.I'm sure CM7 will come out for the Droid so I would say Definitely Yes
