Root Gingerbreak?

Only with certain pre-release (leaked) versions, not the OTA version (.596).

I think it only worked on versions prior to .595, but that's from memory. :D

Okay thank you because everytime I run Gingerbreak it takes forever... i left it running for a half hour and it didn't root.

im using 1.2

Assuming you're running GB, the only way I know to root is to:

  1. Create a recovery backup
  2. Backup all apps+data with Titanium Backup
  3. SBF back to Froyo, formatting data to prevent a boot loop (lose all apps and settings)
  4. Root with zRoot
  5. Install DroidX bootstrap (I believe Droid2 bootstrap would also work here)
  6. Flash rooted version of GB (2 file version)
  7. Install Droid2 bootstrap
  8. Restore missing apps + data with Titanium OR maybe do a advanced restore of data only from recovery (risky, make a backup of new GB first).

EDIT: Sorry, not thinking clearly. You're not rooted so you can't create a recovery backup so guess this is what you can do:

  1. SBF back to Froyo, formatting data to prevent a boot loop (lose all apps and settings)
  2. Root with zRoot
  3. Install DroidX bootstrap (I believe Droid2 bootstrap would also work here)
  4. Flash rooted version of GB (2 file version)
  5. Restore missing apps from Market.
