Root Gingersteem with ROM Mgr and ROM Toolbox Help PLEASE

I have rooted my LG Esteem and am running the custom ROM Gingersteem Extreme. I am using ADW as my Home Screen Replacement and other than that just some very basic everyday apps. Over the past few days I've noticed that my battery life is EXTREMELY poor (understatement, it was bad but not its ridiculous) and I'm getting quite a bit of lag for even the most basic of apps. I do have ROM Manager and ROM Toolbox and was wondering if playing with the settings would be helpful (The CPU Controls: Mhz Min and Max etc..). I'm pretty sure after rooting and installing the custom ROM the performance of both the battery and the phone shouldn't be worse than it was out of the box. I don't need the phone to be a supercomputer or replacement for my laptop but I just want to get it to operate better than my old Huawi did and be able to rely on it as a smart phone. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

well u might want to changed it kernel try homeless kernel 1.3 its a battery saver just not overclock http://db.tt/4oxaGjla

The is where I get lost and don't have a clue. I don't know how to do that stuff nor do I really understand what overclock means? Can a kernal be changed and not the ROM because it was my understanding that the only custom rom that can be used with the esteem is the gingersteem.
 
And the esteem optimizer. I recommend cachemate and sometimes I reboot my phone to freesome ram. After I do that my phone is running fast again ^.^

k if u don't know about it just don't even mess with ur phone before u brick it

The Optimizer has seemed to help the lag issue A LOT....Now if only I could figure out what is draining the battery so quickly.

One final question. What should the Min/Max setting be for the CPU for optimal performance?
