So why change the rom? Is there any benefits, is it mainly for looks, or is it the speed of the custom rom? Just trying to get an idea. And which ones run the fastest for you. Is there some to stay away from?

I'm on rubiX 1.8.9 and highly recommend it. It definitely makes the phone feel snappier than the stock rom and it also removes all of the blur crap.. And yes, I also do it so I can theme the phone.. I cannot stand that gray taskbar!

Plus it's just a fun hobby. Even if the stock rom was speedy and theme-able, I would still experiment with custom roms..

I would stay away from the leaked TBH Android 2.2.1 Build # 2.3.320 and any roms that require it. It updates your bootloader and if you're a beginner I would recommend staying away until an official OTA is released.

yeah i am running Fission 2.2.2 right now and it is quite fast. Rubix is built on the same framework as fission. they both get rid of blur and are very fast.

For me changing the ROM has nothing to do with looks and everything to do with efficiency and speed. Changing the theme is for looks. You can change themes without using a custom ROM.

Looks, Speed, and battery are the only 3 things that will change with your ROM. The speed differences are relatively minor unless you are really feeling your device is slow. The looks/theme of the device can be huge changes for some, minor tweaks for others, or just getting rid of little annoyances. All in all- your device won't "do" anything different if you change the ROM.

Sorta, many roms get rid of blur as well as use apps built from source. this streamlines the apps run cycle and efficiency. Some roms come with other goodies as well. like custom apps, scripts and other functions.

take fission and rubix for example. they are based on a blur platform however all blur is removed and replaced with apps built from source.

I'm using Apex 1.2.2- Really I just did this for fun but I'm glad I did. My phone runs at 1.0Ghz now and its the same speed as me previous setup which was OC'd to 1.25. Oddly I haven't found great stability overclocking this ROM yet but I really don't need to either, its quite fast.

I also enjoy the new transitions but now you can do that without a ROM.

I am on the 2.3.320 version and I SBF'd first, Factory Reset, Wiped Data and Cache, Power Cycle, install Leak. A little overboard but I felt it was safe(ish) for me to flash the latest update this way.

I also like the scripts inside of Apex. I've gotten comfortable with them and changing from Mot to AOSP has been real easy for me to tweak my setup to my liking.

I've tried Tranquility 3 and Fission 2 and quickly dropped both. I don't need the speed (already plenty fast) and didn't like that stuff I need was dropped or generic versions were used.

Still running OTA with a theme and love it.

You could try RubiX blurry. It's sort of the best of both worlds. It keeps the Blur, but removes the bloat, and has speed tweaks. Or not.

The apps people load up their phone with (and probably end up only using a fraction of them), can sometimes cause more slowdown than ROM will compensate for.

Case and point. I messed around with a friend's stock Incredible the other day. Damn did it run fast and smooth. He also had almost nothing on it, aside from a couple time killing games, Handscent, and a few music apps. His eyes bulged when I showed him all of the things you can do to customize an Android phone, but I wasn't about to get him into custom ROMs, because he's plenty happy with a relatively stock setup.
