Help gmail address

Is there any way of changing the gmail address I used when I started up my 'desire' to another gmail address without having to return my phone to factory settings?
I want to use the google talk using another gmail address but it seems to only want to use the one I originally put in as my address. I really don't want to lose all my data and have to start over.

I'm not sure if this is what you want, but go to My Account/email addresses/edit/add alternate email address to your account. You can set which is the primary one.

Sounds like that should make sense, but I don't seem to have a My Account tab to go in to. When I try to remove the account from 'Accounts and Sync' it tells me that in order to do that I must return the phone back to factory defaults and will lose all of my personal data. Surely there must be a way of changing my gmail account without losing everything!

Sorry - I should have said, go to your account on your computer, not phone.
