gmail and mail, what have I done

HI,
Hoping someone can help me.

my email provider is talk talk so I set up the mail app to receive my emails, however I found I couldn't send any. I read on Here to use gmail instead and that would enable me to send messages and to sync emails between the 2 inboxes. But what I have managed to do is have a gmail inbox which I can't get to sync then my mail app is still linked to talktalk but also my gmail so now in my mail it shows that I have a Google account too. However the 2 aren't syncing together. It doesn't create a problem and It does mean I can now send emails from my talktalk mail which is what I wanted but I just want to know what it is I've done to get my head sound it.
Does anyone have any idea

Goto, Settings, Accounts and Sync, select your gmail account, and check sync email.

You can send email from your original account as long as you use the SMTP server that comes with your network provider.

Or, as I do, use a third party secure mail server for $20 p.a. - you can use this from anywhere then.
