Gmail App gone bezerk

Liam1694u

Lurker
My Gmail app just started going all funky glitchy for no reason and I can't seem to fix it. All of the sudden it has become locked on the inbox screen, but cycles the screen image sporatically (sort of like swiping left to right part way, but not enough, so it rebounds). It does it all on its own. I can click on any of the message. I can get to the label screen, but one I click on one it just goes back to the inbox and resumes its screen dancing.

Yes I already tried: rebooting, clearing data, clearing cache, deleting account from syncing and restoring.

It's built-in app and I'm not rooted, so there is no way for me to uninstall it. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (AT&T)

Don't know what to do short of resetting the whole phone.

I just got my Motorola Triumph today, and I'm loving it except one problem. Whenever I open my Gmail app, it starts rapidly scrolling either right, left, or a combo of both with zoom-in and zoom-outs extremely fast. The only way I can exit the app is by pressing the Home key. No other buttons stop the nonstop speed scrolling. All other touch-screen based apps are working great...I can't figure this problem out for the life of me. I also can't uninstall it, and when I try to update it from the market, I get an error telling me my order is processing, try again in a few minutes. I've waited several times to no avail. Any tips?

edit: Clearing the cache, taking battery out, nothing has worked yet, and it's only this app....what the heck?

You aren't alone. A few people have posted up with same issue. I as well. It started happening a few hours ago. Weird thing is, I have 2 gmail accounts on my phone. The secondary account has no issues in the gmail app, but the moment I open the inbox of the primary account it starts freaking out. Already performed all same actions as you. This is on a Sprint GSII. So it looks like Google messed something up.

Not sure on fixes (other than maybe a factory reset if you don't have too much to lose), but perhaps you could use the generic Email app or use Gmail through the browser? Then try updating the Gmail app again in a few days?
If it still doesn't work, depending on where you got it you can exchange it for another new triumph. I haven't heard of this issue before, so you probably just got a weird one. Also, VM does free replacements if you got the phone on eBay or something and don't have that 30 day return policy.

Returning this to Amazon and going to sell this $25 grandfathered plan. I get absolutely no signal at home (work earlier today was fine) whatsoever, even though I'm in the "fair" range on VM's site. That, plus the Gmail issues (didn't fix after factory reset and updates) just seal the deal. Unfortunately I got screwed trying to cut down my big Verizon bill to $25/mo :(

Just a question.

What do you mean by this

"I get absolutely no signal at home"

3g, phone, gps, ?

What are the steps you tried to uninstall gmail ?

(ok, 2 questions)

My Gmail Primary Account is the only account with this problem. My 2 secondary accounts don't have this issue. The Gmail App just keeps trying to open over and over flickering on the screen but never opens completely. I have a Droid Razr Maxx. Problem started when I turned my phone on this morning.

Those of us having issues with the account that is flickering, is this account set for 2 step authentication?

That's the only difference between my primary and secondary account. My primary gmail account is setup with the 2 step authentication, and my second account does not use that. And my wife doesn't use the 2 step either and she not having issues.

Yes, I've got the 2 step authentication enabled, but it has never been a problem in the past. And I've had the 2 step authentication enabled since I got the phone back in October.

Sucks others are having problems but at least know I'm not alone.

I'm thinking it's something Google did on their servers that is causing the issues. I have made no changes or updates in months and this issue just started yesterday.

Also, just for reference I can still access my gmail account email through the regular built-in email application with out any problems. Its only with the actual Gmail app that the problem exists.

I own an HTC Wildfire S and am having the same issue with my Gmail app. It keeps wildly scrolling back and forth. I've tried clearing the data, cache, force stopping, updating the app, restarting and powering off...nothing worked. Could it be a problem with the actual app? Because I had my wife check her Gmail app and it was fine (She has an LG Optimus V). Funny thing is that this started this morning...worked fine yesterday.

And as the original poster mentioned, I'm having no scrolling or other touch screen issues with any of my other apps or phone features.

Hi there,
Just wanted to let you know I'm having the same problem. It started this morning--flickering, no response when I hit the screen or menu button. I tried uninstalling the last update, which did nothing. I assume this is an issue that Google will have to address. Everything else on my phone works just fine.
For the record, I have an HTC Thunderbolt running Android v. 2.3.4

Same here it started this morning uninstalled undate did not do nothing.still went crazy I'm on Motorola triumph running froyocrean then flash it back to reload cm7 (3-4-12) and all good now

I've moved this topic as the issue appears widespread across devices, so giving it as wide an audience as possible seems a good idea.

Hello!

I started to suffer this annoying behaviour after installing (and some minutes afterwards, deinstalling) the app from this webpage:

h**p://club-se.ru/temy-dlya-android-os/live-wallpaper-zhivye-oboi-dlya-android-os/cosmic-flow-sony-xperia-s-v.1.0.a.0.0-2.html

I uninstalled it because of the Force Closes it generated.

So (I suspice), is possible that this app has (at the date of 2012-03-22) any kind of trojan or virus.

After two hours of trying all the possible procedures (and no success) I had to restore my HTC Desire (Froyo Orange stock ROM) to factory defaults with Apps -> Settings -> SD Card & Memory -> Restore to Factory Defaults. (Do not forget to Unmount SD Card before Restore).

Now, the problem HAS GONE. GMAIL App is updated to last version (currently 2.3.5.2) and everything goes right. No more crazy lateral scroll.

Everyone with this crazy scrolling issue will have to remember if in the last hours or day did install any app from a not-so-confident site or any strange app from the Market. (it is known that apps with Trojans may exist in the Market).

Good luck out there!

NOTE: Before making the Restore to Factory I watched the processes running in the phone and nothing strange was revealed. OS Monitor and Quick System Info apps were used.

Same issue here, just started after I updated Google Voice (coinkydink I am sure). My phone did shut itself off earlier today too.
My primary Gmail is fine, my other account doesn't show at all but when I open it through 'accounts' in settings it does the scrolly thing. It did notify me that I had email through it all though.
