Android Question

So, I have an old Galaxy S4 given to me so I can just play around with it to see if I would be interested in switching from iOS to Android.

I saw that the Gmail app now allows you to use it with a non-gmail address (@att.net) which I used for my google account. It's set up in the Gmail app as well. However, the recipients see the email address and not my name? Is there a way to fix this?

That's not something you can correct on your end, it's dependent on how the address book/contacts list is set up for the people receiving your emails. Your email address is your email address and that's how it travels through the different email servers in the Internet. As for the recipients of one of your emails, if they didn't enter a name into their contact list it will just default to whatever the email address is to identify it.
It's the same for you, you can edit an entry in your Contacts by adding a full name, or for instance just use 'Annoying Neighbor' or whatever to identify someone.

This makes sense, but when I tested it with other mail apps, Android and iOS, and sent a test email to my main email, the "outgoing name" appeared and not the email address itself

OK, so change that 'outgoing name' to something uniquely different, send an email to someone and than call them to see if it's different on their end or not.
If you're sending an email to yourself you're still relying on what identifications are in your own address book/contact listing.

Well, it just must be a Gmail app thing. I've tried more free mail apps and my name showed up. Tried again with gmail app and some said the full email address was there some said just the name of the email address showed (xxxx@whatever.com) xxxx only showed. Strange but thanks for the help

Hi, if you go into 'Settings' for the account you have added to Gmail, what do you see in the 'Your name' box?

If I tap the box I can enter whatever name I want and that name will appear on received emails in addition to the full email address. It is strange if you don't have the same option.

There's a lot of variables involved. Different platforms, different email apps on smartphones (along with how they interact with their respective Contact apps), and different desktop email programs (some using their own database for address books or contact lists). Bottom line is the most important thing is the email address itself is exchangeable between all of them.

I do have the exact same thing. My name shows under "your name" as well. Gmail app seems to be the only one that does this...so far. Just found it weird.

Hey there

Just sent a mail from my yahoo mail to my gmail on the gmail app and vice versa , nothing like that happened to me , my name shows instead of my mail both the time , so for that can you clear the gmail app data once and see if the problem persists?

Log into Gmail from a desktop/laptop browser, and navigate to Settings/Send mail as from the Settings icon (the cog wheel) top -right. This lets you configure multiple email addresses, and you can choose which one to use when replying.

Now remember, I am new to Android, and on version 5.0 since the phone isn't activated. So, with that, how is this done?
