Help Gmail app vs. gmail by web

Does anyone know how to disable the ice cream sandwich gmail app without rooting and get an icon for the web version of gmail on the desktop? I'd uninstall the app but I'm not a confident rooter..

I don't like the new gmail app

If you don't want to root, you can:

-use the HTC mail app to set up your Gmail account and access it that way
-go to the Gmail website, bookmark it, and add the bookmark to your homescreen
 
For those who know, how does the HTC app stack up to the gmail app, for gmail?

The gmail app right now is a little glitchy and hard to navigate, the icons are not intuitive and I am having an issue where it doesn't reflow text to my screen properly.

The HTC app works fine w/ Gmail in terms of text display and ease of attachment downloads. Just make sure to disable push notifications on the Gmail app itself, otherwise you'll be clearing out duplicates everytime you sync.
 
i do agree the in built app works just as i has across the 3D. on the original evo the attachments would hang and usually NOT download but was fixed on the 3D (later OS).

that said, im not having issues with duplicate gmail message and i use 3 separate gmail accounts (along with about 5 other pop and one exchange account).


has this issue been reported as a bug to htc? i appreciate the heads up (and I could have missed this posting elsewhere on the forum)

Oh no, it's no bug (sorry if that's how it came across). It's just a standard feature when setting up the account....when you sync, typically you'll get the notification from the HTC app and the notification from the Gmail app about the same message. If you aren't receiving these, then perhaps you've already disabled this setting w/i the app.

For the most part (minus HTC's "Smart Sync" option). There's more customization regarding how and when you want to receive your emails w/ HTC, as opposed to the standard "auto sync" push option through Gmail.

I'm on the fence w/ how I feel about the Smart Sync integration, but in large part due to network service and intermittent wifi issues I've had w/ the phone so far. I'm sure with a somewhat stable signal, it's a beneficial feature.
 
I use the HTC app purely because with the gmail app I have no way to turn off conversation/threaded mode. It works just fine. My wife and son also use the htc mail app.
 
Ok, so I had gmail set up in my HTC EVO 4G LTE and it was working fine, except for that unlike on my original EVO, it was not updating my gmail with changes I made on my phone. That is, on my original EVO, if I deleted a message, it would be in the trash the next time I logged into gmail on my computer. Presently, on the 4G LTE, I have "IMAP" folders that appear when I log into gmail on my computer.

I've figured out that this is the difference between IMAP and POP. Hooray for me. What I cannot figure out, however, is how to make POP work on the email app on the 4G LTE.

I've gone into my gmail settings-

"1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 1/17/05"

"Status: IMAP is disabled"

and on my phone, I have followed the settings provided here.

I've tried restarting my phone, I've tried "refresh" over three million times. Still, all I see is "no mail" (even if I go to the sent folder or other folders besides the inbox).

Does anyone have any info? I tried searching through the forums (EVO 4G LTE; POP; GMAIL) but haven't found any threads.

I assume I'm missing something very obvious here- can someone help me out?

Are you using the stock gmail app or are you using HTC stock mail handler?

also are you rooted?

did you uninstall and re install the account?
